Originally from Bordeaux, Hervé Fabre is now famous for his award-winning Argentine reds. His wines are indeed admirable, but it is the HJ Fabre GGG Malbec 2019 (GGG is Gran Grande Gualtallary in short) that is really special. A cool, high-altitude region in Mendoza’s Uco Valley, Gualtallary is garnering lots of recognition and a cult following for its amazing reds. On the nose, look forward to complex cherry, slate and dark chocolate – even just the aroma is completely mesmerising! On the palate, discover blueberries, plum, black pepper and oak on a long, layered finish. This is superb – a must-have for lovers of fine Argentine Malbec.

This is a refreshingly elegant white from the Holdaway estate in Marlborough. The family started the farm in 1854, buying up land in Wairau and Dillons Point, now two key areas for vines. Their previous vintage was described by Sam Kim in the Wine Orbit as "impressively aromatic" with "excellent concentration, together with terrific fruit purity and vibrancy." And quality in 2021 was even better, so look forward to great tangy-fresh glass. Tasty solo, with seafood, noodles or creamy risotto.

Pinot Grigio has staged something of a coup in fridge doors and on dining tables in recent years. Gorgeously fruity, well-priced examples like our Il Papavero are rare, however. The wine is from Scipione Giuliani, who searches throughout Italy to find the finest parcels of grapes, usually blending them to get the perfect balance in a wine. For this Pinot Grigio, however, he was so taken with the fruit from the high hills of Sicily, with its idyllic sunshine and sea breezes, there was no need to look elsewhere.

Il Papavero is mouthwatering stuff, a moreish mix of pear and citrus flavours with both ripeness and bracing freshness thanks to the coastal cooled location of the vines. Pure delight on its own or with white meats or risotto.

An elite red with all the pedigree of the world’s finest wines. Think the great reds of Bordeaux, but richer and denser – swirling with dark fruits and seductive spices. Not to mention, Ixsir winery is one of Lebanon’s best. No surprise really, considering the legend who works for them. Hubert de Boüard is the winemaker behind Saint-Émilion’s £250-a-bottle Château Angélus. At a much kinder price this sophisticated, spicy red is a special treat that's hard to put down.
