On Bordeaux’s Left Bank, in the heart of the Haut-Médoc, Pauillac is one of the most sought-after appellations for fine, muscular, long-aged claret. It boasts three Premiers Grands Crus Classés, namely Mouton-Rothschild, Lafite and Latour. Château Haut-Pauillac belongs to the Peyronnie family and boasts vineyards dotted between some of the finest estates – vines planted on gravel soils, enjoying a climate moderated by their proximity to the Gironde estuary. Largely Cabernet Sauvignon, softened by a little Merlot, the wine was aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 15-20% of which were new. To enjoy this fine claret, open an hour beforehand and decant. A superb red to serve with your finest red meat dishes or a choice of firm farmhouse cheeses.

As with all wines from this outstanding domaine, Ginestières Merlot delivers quality and style beyond what you'd expect of a simple 'vin de France'. With dark cassis and wild herb flavours, this silky gem's a smart alternative to costlier St-Émilion.

It’s rare to see a French Merlot of this calibre at this price. This is partly explained by its provenance, the Languedoc Roussillon, “the most exciting region in France” (Sunday Times), which also provides much of France’s best-value wine. But credit must also go to ‘Merlot maestro’ Claude Gros, who perfected his skills in Saint-Émilion. Among his many successes is a now famous Merlot-rich Grand Cru, Château La Fleur Morange, that scored 96/100 from critic Robert Parker. Claude returned to his southern French roots, and Domaine Ginestières at the heart of the Minervois, where he makes this majestic Merlot at an amazingly down to earth price. In 2023, RedHeads’ dynamo team, deep in the Barossa, won Best Red Wine Trophy at the Barossa Show for this fabulous Touriga. It’s a first-release red from their own vineyard, outside the winery door. Darkly fruity with a delicious, sappy freshness.

The RedHeads team specialise in small-batch, one-off wines from various South Australia regions, using top-quality grapes from their best grower-mates. There may only be a few rows worth but, bottled solo, the grapes make a terrific wine that stands out in a crowd. But you have to be quick – the bottles disappear quickly. For this Trophy-winning red, RedHeads’ head honcho and winemaker, Alex Trescowthick didn’t have to look far! The grapes are all from the small vineyard outside the winery door, only planted in 2019. Touriga only makes up .2 hectares and part of it goes into their Icon wines. However, in 2023, the quality was so exceptional, they bottled a small amount solo. And were rewarded for their pains with a Trophy and two Golds.

Saracosa is inspired by the 'Super Tuscans' – a style first developed by Antinori in the 1970s.

These wines kick started the region's renaissance and became some of the most exclusive and expensive in the world. Saracosa is from the Barbanera family estate, overlooked by the Saracosa hill near Montalcino. Half the vineyards are in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, and the remainder just beyond. In the fine 2019 vintage Saracosa's old vines delivered exceptional concentration.
The fruit was then part-aged in French oak barriques to lend a toasty layer of complexity. Dense, dark cherry and chocolatey tones make this a serious choice for pasta with pork ragù or bistecca alla fiorentina (steak with cannellini beans in tomato sauce).

We first met Dino when he began restoring his grandfather's earthquake-struck vineyard, high in the Sicilian hills. You loved the wine it made - Tenuta Fenice. Not one to rest on his laurels, he's started another ambitious new project called w/o - wine made without compromise. He chose native Frappato as his champion, all grown organically thanks to Sicily's warm, dry climate and Dino's diligence. It's bottled in 100% recycled glass too, known as 'wild' glass, a UK first. You may notice a little variation in colour, perhaps a few tiny bubbles. All part of the charm, as is the delicious red berry and cherry fruit that greets you on the aroma and continues through on the bright, juicy palate. Try chilled solo, or with pizza or pesto pasta.
