This juicy, full of fruit Aussie red sums up the best of Aussie wine – gorgeous ripe fruit, good intensity and freshness. Great value too. Way & Cat is short for ‘wayfaring catador’, catador being Spanish for taster. So the name is a tribute to how the team source their fruit – they head out into the vineyards to taste the grapes of their grower friends. When they find the selections they like, they vinify each parcel separately, then blend the results into fruit first expressions of the varieties they chose.

That blend changes vintage by vintage, depending what performs well that year. It's top for versatility too – great as a glass on its own, tasty with roasted vegetable quiche, sausage and mash. And just the ticket at a barbecue.

Southern France's Languedoc produces red wines of remarkable richness and depth. Long lived too, when they come from smart areas like Monpeyroux. A 3-way split of deeply concentrated Carignan, Grenache and Syrah, it's velvety with herbal black fruit.

Ambitious to achieve full cru status, Montpeyroux lies just northeast of Montpellier, nestled in the foothills of famous Larzac, the wines of which go for a high sum. Montpeyroux is a small village that has been prized for its exceptional wines since the Romans. It used to be an important trading post, as well as a refuge for pilgrims on their long trudge to Santiago de Compostella. This spring, our buyer based close by discovered this terrific red in the local wine bar and sought out the cellar. Vineyards here are buffeted all year round by the strong local wind, La Tramontane. It helps keep the vines disease-free and means the grapes ripen only slowly. Old-vine Carignan, Grenache and Syrah, it's a rich dark partner for a hearty casserole.

Largely Cabernet Sauvignon, softened by a little Merlot, the wine was aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 15-20% of which were new. To enjoy this fine claret, open an hour beforehand and decant. One of the four owners is Stéphane Derenoncourt, who also makes wine at some of Saint-Emilion’s smartest addresses (La Mondotte, Canon La Gaffelière and Pavie Macquin). One of America’s leading critics Robert Parker always scores the wine highly, describing it as “consistently one of my picks as an overachieving wine”. Critic James Suckling called the wine "very appealing" and "very satisfying". Hand-picked, low-yield Merlot aged in new oak, this is a deeply flavoured, well-structured, voluptuous, modern-style claret, velvety, too. A top pick with roast lamb.
