Just a stone’s throw from Château Giscours, Labégorce makes appealing Margaux, with all the character of this sought-after commune. This 92-93 point 2020 punches well above its price and offers very good value indeed when compared to its neighbours.

There's been immense praise from critics for Bordeaux's 2020 vintage, "another great year for Bordeaux" wrote James Suckling; "Margaux is one of the success stories of 2020" put Neal Martin, while Jancis Robinson declared "stunning wines have been produced". Although yields were down, Margaux performed well and Château Labégorce is an excellent buy. Unlike many of its neighbours Labégorce wasn’t classified in 1855, meaning that the wines remain today very well priced. With vines on average 30 years old, some over 100, they yield grapes of tremendous concentration, the flavour of which is flattered by ageing for 15 months in half-new oak barrels. With rich, warm black fruits, espresso notes and firm rounded tannins, this is a keeper.

It’s rare to see a French Merlot of this calibre at this price. This is partly explained by its provenance, the Languedoc Roussillon, “the most exciting region in France” (Sunday Times), which also provides much of France’s best-value wine. But credit must also go to ‘Merlot maestro’ Claude Gros, who perfected his skills in Saint-Émilion. Among his many successes is a now famous Merlot-rich Grand Cru, Château La Fleur Morange, that scored 96/100 from critic Robert Parker. Claude returned to his southern French roots, and Domaine Ginestières at the heart of the Minervois, where he makes this majestic Merlot at an amazingly down to earth price. We’d love to reveal the name of the illustrious château behind this fine claret, but we’re sworn to secrecy. We can reveal, though, that it’s made at a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate in Pauillac whose Grand Vin sells for sixteen times the price.

L’Épiphanie de Pauillac is the latest of our secret releases from iconic Bordeaux châteaux. It hails from Pauillac’s top tier – a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate. There are only three in the appellation: Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild and Latour. We guarantee this wine is from one of them. It isn’t their Grand Vin, of course, but it’s made from the same fruit by the same winemaker and housed in the same barrels. Yet it costs less than 1/16th of the Grand Vin’s price.

L’Épiphanie de Pauillac has blackcurrant, cherry and ripe plum infused with subtle spice, cedar and cigar box notes. These classic aromas combine with firm tannins for a complex wine with a long finish. By all means open a bottle now, but cellaring will pay dividends.

Saracosa is inspired by the 'Super Tuscans' – a style first developed by Antinori in the 1970s.

These wines kick started the region's renaissance and became some of the most exclusive and expensive in the world. Saracosa is from the Barbanera family estate, overlooked by the Saracosa hill near Montalcino. Half the vineyards are in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, and the remainder just beyond. In the fine 2019 vintage Saracosa's old vines delivered exceptional concentration.
The fruit was then part-aged in French oak barriques to lend a toasty layer of complexity. Dense, dark cherry and chocolatey tones make this a serious choice for pasta with pork ragù or bistecca alla fiorentina (steak with cannellini beans in tomato sauce).

We first met Dino when he began restoring his grandfather's earthquake-struck vineyard, high in the Sicilian hills. You loved the wine it made - Tenuta Fenice. Not one to rest on his laurels, he's started another ambitious new project called w/o - wine made without compromise. He chose native Frappato as his champion, all grown organically thanks to Sicily's warm, dry climate and Dino's diligence. It's bottled in 100% recycled glass too, known as 'wild' glass, a UK first. You may notice a little variation in colour, perhaps a few tiny bubbles. All part of the charm, as is the delicious red berry and cherry fruit that greets you on the aroma and continues through on the bright, juicy palate. Try chilled solo, or with pizza or pesto pasta.
