South of Lisbon on Portugal’s Atlantic coast, the Setúbal Peninsula is famous for its rolling Atlantic waves and its long-lived, fortified sweet wines. However, the sunny climate, tempered by cooling ocean breezes, is also proving itself with bold, fruit-forward reds. Parker-rated winemaker Jaime Quendera firmly believes in the region and is dedicated to bringing it to the world’s attention. He says “I love being able to create, blend and shape my wines – I strive always to produce the best wine possible.” Indeed, he was the man behind the ‘Best Red Wine in the World’ a few years back. Way & Cat is short for ‘wayfaring catador’, catador being Spanish for taster. So the name is a tribute to how the team source their fruit – they head out into the vineyards to taste the grapes of their grower friends. When they find the selections they like, they vinify each parcel separately, then blend the results into fruit first expressions of the varieties they chose.

That blend changes vintage by vintage, depending what performs well that year. It's top for versatility too – great as a glass on its own, tasty with roasted vegetable quiche, sausage and mash. And just the ticket at a barbecue.

Château Peybourdieu is exactly the type of small, under the radar property we love to champion. It also illustrates Robert Parker’s advice not to “overlook the so-called petits vins of Bordeaux – they frequently compete with wines selling for two or three times the price”. Winemaker Denis Cayé is the third generation of his family at the property and his years of experience are evident in this fine 2021 vintage. The estate lies just north of the Haut-Médoc, between the Atlantic and Gironde estuary, protected from strong winds by forest.

A classic Médoc blend of Cabernet and Merlot, it delivers blackcurrant, earthy and oaky hints with a liquorice and cigar box character. Open a few hours early and decant. It's excellent with roast meats.

There's been immense praise from critics for Bordeaux's 2020 vintage, "another great year for Bordeaux" wrote James Suckling; "Margaux is one of the success stories of 2020" put Neal Martin, while Jancis Robinson declared "stunning wines have been produced". Although yields were down, Margaux performed well and Château Labégorce is an excellent buy. Unlike many of its neighbours Labégorce wasn’t classified in 1855, meaning that the wines remain today very well priced. With vines on average 30 years old, some over 100, they yield grapes of tremendous concentration, the flavour of which is flattered by ageing for 15 months in half-new oak barrels. With rich, warm black fruits, espresso notes and firm rounded tannins, this is a keeper.

The palate is crisp, well-balanced and savoury and shows more of the same, extremely delightful aromas ... already very enjoyable”, and the 2022 has just scooped another Gold. It’s a classic blend of mostly Merlot, with a healthy dash of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc – a delicious balance between ripe fruit, structured tannins and freshness. A wine that will really come into its own with food. Serve alongside a Sunday roast beef with mushrooms to bring out the wine’s fruit.
