Low Stock Alentejano Limited Release 2021

Alentejano Limited Release 2021

Item Code: 4402521

Description

Fans of Portugal’s rich, dark reds, listen up! Here’s a special, one-off parcel from one of our favourite,multi-award-winning producers. Using nearly all native grapes, aged in barriques, it has very deep fruit, with layers of toasty complexity.

From a winery and winemaker that bring you Stones & Bones, one of our top-scoring Portuguese reds, this is a fabulous, one-off, premium release. It’s a red with two years’ maturity – delicious drinking now, but one with the richness, depth and structure for ageing, too.

It’s made by Vasco Martins at the fifth-generation family cellar, Casa Santos Lima, a terrific blend of 40% Syrah, with portions of Alicante, Touriga Nacional and Aragonez, all aged in French and American oak barriques, to lend layers of toasty vanilla spice to the dense black fruit. A sensational red with amazing depth of flavour. Best to open early and decant, if you can, so all the flavours open out. A great wine to serve with roast lamb, rich casseroles or at a barbecue.

Portinho do Côvo 2023

Item Code: 0183823

Description

From star winemaker Jaime Quendera, this voluptuous red is a luscious combination of native Aragonez, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, all grown in the ocean-cooled, fast-draining soils of the Setúbal Peninsula. Rich black fruits brim from the glass.

South of Lisbon on Portugal’s Atlantic coast, the Setúbal Peninsula is famous for its rolling Atlantic waves and its long-lived, fortified sweet wines. However, the sunny climate, tempered by cooling ocean breezes, is also proving itself with bold, fruit-forward reds. Parker-rated winemaker Jaime Quendera firmly believes in the region and is dedicated to bringing it to the world’s attention. He says “I love being able to create, blend and shape my wines – I strive always to produce the best wine possible.” Indeed, he was the man behind the ‘Best Red Wine in the World’ a few years back. This 2023 is a sumptuous blend of native Aragonez, Syrah and Cabernet, all harvested from old vines to produce a wine brimful with spiced black fruit.

Ultima Edizione NV

Item Code: 0232522

Description

When we first showed this at a customer tasting, it scored double the points of its nearest rival. Winemaker Dennis Verdecchia combines ripe Montepulciano, cherryish Sangiovese, dark Primitivo and spicy Negroamaro for powerful flavour.

Ultima Edizione started a few years back as a special project from the Farnese cellar. Based in an ancient castle in Abruzzo, the cellar has a terrific reputation and has been named Italy’s ‘Winery of the Year’ three times. We've been working with them for many years and for this wine we gave them free rein to produce the best red possible, regardless of region.

Talented winemaker today is Dennis Verdecchia, who cherry picked tiny parcels of premium soft, ripe Montepulciano and Sangiovese from Abruzzo, and dark Primitivo and spicy Negroamaro from sun-baked vineyards in Puglia in the south. Barrel ageing, then blending has produced this intensely flavoured, velvety red. Weighty, it’s best with roasted pork belly or a rich casserole.

Low Stock Way & Cat South Australia Red Blend 2020

Way & Cat South Australia Red Blend 2020

Item Code: 4149520

Description

For lovers of juicy ripe reds, this sun kissed Aussie wine is the cat’s pyjamas. Individually sourced parcels of grapes, fermented, then blended ensure an overflow of fruit forward flavour. Silky plum, raspberry and a sinuous smoky wrap.

This juicy, full of fruit Aussie red sums up the best of Aussie wine – gorgeous ripe fruit, good intensity and freshness. Great value too. Way & Cat is short for ‘wayfaring catador’, catador being Spanish for taster. So the name is a tribute to how the team source their fruit – they head out into the vineyards to taste the grapes of their grower friends. When they find the selections they like, they vinify each parcel separately, then blend the results into fruit first expressions of the varieties they chose.

That blend changes vintage by vintage, depending what performs well that year. It's top for versatility too – great as a glass on its own, tasty with roasted vegetable quiche, sausage and mash. And just the ticket at a barbecue.

Low Stock Vilarissa Valley 2022

Vilarissa Valley 2022

Item Code: 4036722

Description

The Van Zellers have led the way in wine in Portugal's Douro for 15 generations, and have produced some of its finest reds. This is no exception. Packed with luscious ripe fruit, spice and violets hints with plush ripe tannins, it's rich and warming.

Our customers know that it's hard to beat Portugal for flavour and value. So we were particularly excited about Vilarissa Valley, made by the Van Zellers – the family who founded the great Quinta do Noval in 1715. They're renowned for the quality of their winemaking - firstly for world-class vintage port, one of which was rated among the greatest wines of the last century. Plus, they've led the field in Douro table wines. For Vilarissa Valley, the team sourced grapes from the high Alto Douro – local grapes with peerless levels of richness and concentration. The result is a deep wine with velvet smoothness and gorgeous richness, and finished in port barrels for extra spice. A classic that pairs perfectly with steak and frites or a rich stew.

M Squared NV

Item Code: 4196621

Description

M is for Merlot, M is for Malbec, it's a maverick wine, a meeting of minds! The minds are from Bordeaux and 150km east in Cahors. Blending their grapes, plummy Merlot and dark-fruited Malbec, and ageing in oak, the wine's all supple fruit and spice.

Step 1 take a special parcel of exceptional Bordeaux Merlot. Vinify it using a special no-sulphur method for maximum, gulpable fruit. Step 2: blend with a parcel of Malbec from its original French homeland, ancient Cahors. From growers who know how to draw out the grape's gorgeous black fruit and not its mouthcoating tannins. Step 3: age it in barrels to add notes of sweet spice to all that glorious fruit. The winemakers were so taken by their experimental cuvée, they insisted we shared it with you! This blending is a total No-No for Bordeaux's stuffy appellation laws (and Cahors too) and an utter Yes-Yes for customers who love ripe, smooth-fruited reds. So silky, you can drink it on its own. Or with just about anything. No rules here!
