200 Gallons Reserva 2022

Item Code: 4097122

Description

DW Wine Club Member Price: $99

Jaime Quendera, our favourite Portuguese winemaker, has made a juicy, fruit-forward red, aged in a very special cask. Enjoy Alicante Bouschet’s smooth texture in this red from rare, ancient vines that oozes rich flavours of black cherry and pepper.

Can you imagine buying 1,008 bottles of wine in one year? That’s 200 gallons to be exact – the same amount that each American household was allowed to make for ‘personal use’ during Prohibition. And the go-to grape during this DIY time wasn’t Cabernet or Merlot, it was the bold and juicy Alicante Bouschet - widely planted in California but originally from Portugal. Today, award-winning winemaker Jamie Quendera has crafted a mighty, Reserva-quality red, from rare 100-year-old vines. And the unique twist? Jamie aged the wine for 12 months in custom double casks. The top and bottom are French oak (imparting subtle spice) while the long side planks are American (for vanilla notes). The result is an ultra-smooth, cherry-ripe, well-spiced drop!

Low Stock Alentejano Limited Release 2021

Alentejano Limited Release 2021

Item Code: 4402521

Description

Fans of Portugal’s rich, dark reds, listen up! Here’s a special, one-off parcel from one of our favourite,multi-award-winning producers. Using nearly all native grapes, aged in barriques, it has very deep fruit, with layers of toasty complexity.

From a winery and winemaker that bring you Stones & Bones, one of our top-scoring Portuguese reds, this is a fabulous, one-off, premium release. It’s a red with two years’ maturity – delicious drinking now, but one with the richness, depth and structure for ageing, too.

It’s made by Vasco Martins at the fifth-generation family cellar, Casa Santos Lima, a terrific blend of 40% Syrah, with portions of Alicante, Touriga Nacional and Aragonez, all aged in French and American oak barriques, to lend layers of toasty vanilla spice to the dense black fruit. A sensational red with amazing depth of flavour. Best to open early and decant, if you can, so all the flavours open out. A great wine to serve with roast lamb, rich casseroles or at a barbecue.

Low Stock Antakari Carmenère Syrah 2021

Antakari Carmenère Syrah 2021

Item Code: 0331321

Description

Chile's Elqui Valley boasts some of the world’s highest vineyards, as well as clear skies and purest sunshine. Today, thanks to the vision of Italian Giorgio Flessati, it makes great wines too, like this intense and peppery Carmenère-Syrah blend.

Lying next to the Atacama Desert, the Elqui Valley seems an unlikely spot to grow high quality grapes.

However, a down draught from the Andes and the Pacific’s Humboldt Current both help to moderate temperatures by day and ensure very cold nights.

In addition, the sunlight is exceptionally bright and snowmelt from the Andes provides all the irrigation water required.

Viña Falernia, one of only two wineries in the valley, was built in the late 1990s by Italian Giorgio Flessati and won a Trophy with its first vintage. Elqui produces “some particularly gutsy Syrah at altitudes of over 2,000 metres” (World Atlas of Wine), and the Carmenère is equally robust.

Deep bramble, cassis and spice character, it's great with lamb. Best decanted.

Antonio Federici Rosso Roma 2021

Item Code: 3737421

Description

Appealing, silky, ripe artisan red from close to Rome - cherry-laden with warming oak spice.

Antonio Federici is a small, 3rd-generation cellar in Lazio, just south of Rome. As you'll taste here, its wines are both authentic and delicious. Normally, they only supply their meagre output to top restaurants in Rome.

But with most shut in 2020, we managed to gain a small allocation of this superb, cherry-scented red. And again, the following year. On fine limestone soils (the rocks of which were used to build some of Rome's most famous buildings) they grow some of Italy's most characterful native grapes.

From these they make a small range of award-winning wines. No doubt the skill of top Italian consultant Franco and Matteo Bernabei comes into play, as well as the commitment and passion of the family.

A silky, smooth, easy red.

Low Stock Arquero Malbec 2023

Arquero Malbec 2023

Item Code: 3540023

Description

Fans of Argentinian Malbec will enjoy delicious Arquero. It’s from a family-owned bodega in the San Juan region. There vines grow as high as 700 metres, yet the climate is warm, producing silky, supple ripeness in this spicy, berry-filled red.

Argentina’s Malbec has taken the world by storm. While most come from Mendoza, Arquero hails from San Juan in the northwest. Vineyards are planted high, around 700 metres, under clear skies, providing optimal conditions for the vines. Despite producing delicious wines, the region’s lack of marketing muscle means they remain something of a secret. Here you’ll find Bodegas Antigua, started in 1990 by wine enthusiast Don Luis Victor Chirino. A builder by trade, he bought a winery with land for vines. His HQ is a historic building and local landmark, erected in 1918 and one of San Juan’s first earthquake-proof structures. After restoration, it’s been transformed into a wonderful cellar. A red ideal for solo sipping, or with grilled meats.

Baía de Tróia Castelão 2022

Item Code: 3497022

Description

Made from the grapes of vineyards first planted 2,000 years ago, Baía di Tróia is deliciously rich, powerful and velvety smooth. A Portuguese Black Red that's only crafted in the best years and with yields so tiny, there's never much to go round.

Let’s go back in time! To the 1st century AD and vineyards planted to serve the ruling elite at the thriving Roman port of Troia. Here, on Portugal’s windswept Atlantic coast, the only grape that thrives in the dry, sandy soils and super-hot sun is local star Castelão. This small, dark-skinned grape boasts fathomless depths of flavour – if you know how to unlock it. Back to today and enter Gold-medal maestro Jaime Quendera at Portugal’s most awarded winery, Casa Ermelinda Freitas. Only made in the best years, this Black Red flies of our shelves as soon as it's in stock. So our advice is: if you see it, buy it! Rippling with ripe plums, black fruits and laced with chocolate, with a spicy oak finish. At 14.5% it’s got power, so sip slowly.

Bendito Reserva Shiraz Cabernet 2022

Item Code: 4399122

Description

For lovers of juicy ripe reds, this sun-kissed Aussie wine is the cat’s pyjamas. Individually sourced parcels of grapes, fermented, then blended ensure an overflow of fruit forward flavour. Silky plum, raspberry and a sinuous smoky wrap.

This juicy, full-of-fruit red sums up the best of Aussie wine – gorgeous ripe flavour, good intensity and freshness. Way & Cat is short for ‘wayfaring catador’, catador being Spanish for taster.

So the name is a tribute to how the team source their fruit – they head out into the vineyards to taste the grapes of their grower friends. When they find the selections they like, they vinify each parcel separately, then blend the results into fruit first expressions of the varieties they chose. That blend changes vintage by vintage, depending on what performs well that year. It's top for versatility too – great as a glass on its own, tasty with roasted vegetable quiche, sausage and mash. And just the ticket at a barbecue.
