Château de Francs 2016

Item Code: 1140216

Description

Château de Francs is one of the oldest estates of Bordeaux. Taken up by two leading Saint Emilion figures in 1985 and lavished with much investment, its clarets are superb. From the classic 2016 vintage, this fine red is dark, velvety and complex.

The beautifully restored, medieval Château de Francs has been the pet project of school friends Hubert de Boüard of Château Angelus and Dominique Hébrard, formerly of Château Cheval Blanc, since the 1980s. With such illustrious backgrounds, it was perhaps surprising that the two decided to invest in little known Côtes de Francs, Bordeaux’s smallest appellation. But it has proved a propitious move. As you'd expect, it comprises mostly of hand harvested Merlot, with a little of both Cabernets, aged 50% in new oak for around 12 months. It’s full bodied and intense with ripe, concentrated fruit, while ageing in barrel lends layers of complexity and roundness. Enjoy this exceptional claret with confit de canard or steak.

Low Stock Fuente de Irache Crianza Navarra 2019

Fuente de Irache Crianza Navarra 2019

Item Code: 4181419

Description

From Navarra vineyards predating the Crusades, on Rioja's border, this is a fabulous, silky, oak-aged red.

It's made at an ancient monastery-turned-winery on the famous Camino de Santiago - the pilgrim's way. Dark, smoky berry with toasty oak.

Right in the shadow of neighbouring Rioja, Navarra is a much neglected region. But for those in the know, it "produces wines in many cases that are superior to its more famous neighbour" (The Times). This cracking Crianza is from the Irache monastery, founded centuries back by the King of Spain as a hospital to tend pilgrims on the dusty Camino de Santiago trail.

The monks today have gone and instead, behind the thick walls, is an impressive winery. There, pilgrims are still revived the ancient way with a scallop shell of wine from the famous fountain. They don't, however, get the good stuff - the Fuente de Irache Crianza. That is prized by the locals and has to be purchased! And, just for the first time, it's escaped the borders of Spain.

Low Stock HJ Fabre Reservado Cabernet Franc 2021

HJ Fabre Reservado Cabernet Franc 2021

Item Code: 3350521

Description

Since Hervé Fabre set foot in Argentina in the 1990s, he’s been a pioneering spirit in wine. Every year he wins Trophies and high points galore. This exceptional Mendoza Cabernet Franc is beautifully balanced, barrel aged, with silky fruit finesse.

Raised in Bordeaux, Hervé Fabre departed France in the early 1990s in search of new and more challenging wine territory in which to invest. He was heading for Chile but became side tracked by old Malbec vineyards in Argentina and never left. Hervé now runs a leading estate in Mendoza, and another in Patagonia, and has won hoards of international Golds and Trophies. Every year his wines also score very highly with top critics like Parker, Suckling and Atkin. This superb red, made from the grape most favoured by Bordeaux superstar Cheval Blanc, uses all hand picked Cabernet Franc from Luján de Cuyo in Mendoza. Aged for a year in French oak, it’s an elegant, complex red that will make fine drinking over the next few years. Decant early.

Low Stock Ixsir Altitudes Rouge 2018

Ixsir Altitudes Rouge 2018

Item Code: 4151518

Description

Luxury in a bottle - black-fruited Cabernet meets spicy Syrah, juicy Tempranillo, and dark Caladoc, all grown in vineyards 1,800m above sea level. You can see where this red gets its name. Rich, silky and elegant.

An elite red with all the pedigree of the world’s finest wines. Think the great reds of Bordeaux, but richer and denser – swirling with dark fruits and seductive spices. Flavours that linger well after you’ve put down the glass. So where’s this stunning red from? France? Italy? Spain? No, it’s Lebanon. Called “the wine world’s best-kept secret” by Master of Wine Tim Atkin, this country has been making fine wines for thousands of years.

Not to mention, Ixsir winery is one of Lebanon’s best. No surprise really, considering the legend who works for them. Hubert de Boüard is the winemaker behind Saint-Émilion’s £250-a-bottle Château Angélus. At a much kinder price this sophisticated, spicy red is a special treat that's hard to put down.
