Description

Temperatures have risen a little over the decades in Germany's top vineyards. The upside is that its dry whites have never tasted better, especially when they are from Weingut Leitz. This is a delightfully crisp, lemon and lime scented dry Riesling.

Weingut Josef Leitz is located in Rüdesheim, at the western end of the Rheingau. As the German Wine Guide notes, “Few in the Rheingau make finer wines than Leitz.” This family estate is run by Johannes Leitz, who took over what was then a 2.6 hectare property in 1985, aged just 21, and grew it to 43 hectares. It was the Rheingau that “established Germany’s reputation for world class white wines” (Hugh Johnson) and The Boar bears this out. Ironically its named after the wild boar that are far too fond of guzzling the grapes that ripen so perfectly on the south facing slopes of the vineyard. Chill down and enjoy this zesty, poised, citrusy white on its own, or with gentle dishes of grilled fish, other seafood, tangy noodles or tasty salads.

The Lauren-Cabaret cellar has been making great wine in the Minervois region for almost 100 years. Villa Claudius is pure, handpicked Carignan, whole-grape fermented (like Beaujolais) to highlight its bright silky fruit, wild herbs and spice notes.

It’s rare to discover a red wine from the Minervois region made purely from Carignan. Even rarer, when it’s all from old-vine Carignan, but for this prize-winning cellar it’s something of a speciality, clear from the Gold medal that it’s already won. Winemaker Sylvain Delabre knows exactly how to get the very best from his precious handpicked grapes, bringing out all the supple blackberry and raspberry fruit, along with subtle notes of wild herbs and spice. Whole grape fermentation ensures the wine is deliciously silky and supple, with minimal tannins and no hard edges. A red wine with character and depth, and freshness too. Not one to rest on his laurels, he's started another ambitious new project called w/o - wine made without compromise. He chose native Frappato as his champion, all grown organically thanks to Sicily's warm, dry climate and Dino's diligence. It's bottled in 100% recycled glass too, known as 'wild' glass, a UK first. You may notice a little variation in colour, perhaps a few tiny bubbles. All part of the charm, as is the delicious red berry and cherry fruit that greets you on the aroma and continues through on the bright, juicy palate. Try chilled solo, or with pizza or pesto pasta.
