In 2023, RedHeads’ dynamo team, deep in the Barossa, won Best Red Wine Trophy at the Barossa Show for this fabulous Touriga. It’s a first-release red from their own vineyard, outside the winery door. Darkly fruity with a delicious, sappy freshness.

The RedHeads team specialise in small-batch, one-off wines from various South Australia regions, using top-quality grapes from their best grower-mates. There may only be a few rows worth but, bottled solo, the grapes make a terrific wine that stands out in a crowd. But you have to be quick – the bottles disappear quickly. For this Trophy-winning red, RedHeads’ head honcho and winemaker, Alex Trescowthick didn’t have to look far! The grapes are all from the small vineyard outside the winery door, only planted in 2019. Touriga only makes up .2 hectares and part of it goes into their Icon wines. However, in 2023, the quality was so exceptional, they bottled a small amount solo. And were rewarded for their pains with a Trophy and two Golds.

Not surprisingly for a dance that’s evolved over a thousand years, the origin of the tarantella is shrouded in mystery. Some say it was devised in Taranto, Puglia, as a cure for the tarantula’s bite (provided victims danced for three days and nights); others say it was an antidote to the morso (bite) d’amor. Less mythical, but equally enchanting, is the origin of its namesake wine.

Discovered by our Buyer in a wild area of bountiful sunshine, ancient vineyards, olive groves and trulli, Tarantella Merlot instantly won over customers with its ripe plum and sweet spice character. The name 'Vertiges' translates as 'fear of heights'. Apt for a wine made from grapes gathered on precipitous slopes by Peyrepertuse Castle. 500m above sea level on a ragged Pyrenean peak, the vines produce a wine with luscious, ripe flavour.



A fear of heights is a non-starter for those working in the vineyards of Vallée du Paradis. They perch perilously on the slopes below Peyrepertuse, an ancient Cathar fortress some 800m high in the Pyrenees. So collecting the intensely fruity, aromatic grapes is not for the faint-hearted. Luckily, winemaker Benjamin Andrieu is willing to put fear aside to tend them.

?The result is a really appealing red, with bright fruit and seductively spiced notes. Syrah brings ripe blackberry, herbs and liquorice notes, while juicy Grenache and peppery Carignan add even more depth and body. A top choice for those who love smooth, silky reds with the warmth of southern France. Great with grilled meats, pasta with pesto, aubergine bake or on its own.

Delectable and intriguing in many ways, this Rioja is rare. It's made from pure Graciano, aged gently for a year in French oak barrels. This is a sublime red from a 5-star family estate, with red berry, plum, tea and creamy spice notes.

Carlos and Pilar Martínez Bujanda are 4th-generation winemakers who blaze a trail. Their great grandfather founded a cellar in 1889, which the siblings reimagined in 1984 with a state-of-the-art cellar, one of Spain's finest. That sealed their worldwide reputation for quality. Since then, Carlos and Pilar have founded the very beautiful Finca Valpiedra estate in the Alavesa and their most recent project, Viña Bujanda, in Oyón, where their great grandfather started the family's journey. This is fabulous red, made purely from Graciano, a variety that once was Rioja's chief grape, yet today makes up just 1%, but increasing. No surprise when you taste the sublime quality of this wine. Aged a year in French oak casks, it has matured beautifully.

Presenting w/o - winemaker Dino Taschetta's ambitious new project. A wine made without (w/o) compromise. A delicious berry and cherry-filled Sicilian red, mindfully made. Packaged in 100% recycled glass, it’s aromatic and brimming with bright fruits.

We first met Dino when he began restoring his grandfather's earthquake-struck vineyard, high in the Sicilian hills. You loved the wine it made - Tenuta Fenice. Not one to rest on his laurels, he's started another ambitious new project called w/o - wine made without compromise. He chose native Frappato as his champion, all grown organically thanks to Sicily's warm, dry climate and Dino's diligence. It's bottled in 100% recycled glass too, known as 'wild' glass, a UK first. You may notice a little variation in colour, perhaps a few tiny bubbles. All part of the charm, as is the delicious red berry and cherry fruit that greets you on the aroma and continues through on the bright, juicy palate. Try chilled solo, or with pizza or pesto pasta.
