Fans of Argentinian Malbec will enjoy delicious Arquero. It’s from a family-owned bodega in the San Juan region. There vines grow as high as 700 metres, yet the climate is warm, producing silky, supple ripeness in this spicy, berry-filled red.

Argentina’s Malbec has taken the world by storm. While most come from Mendoza, Arquero hails from San Juan in the northwest. Vineyards are planted high, around 700 metres, under clear skies, providing optimal conditions for the vines. Despite producing delicious wines, the region’s lack of marketing muscle means they remain something of a secret. Here you’ll find Bodegas Antigua, started in 1990 by wine enthusiast Don Luis Victor Chirino. A builder by trade, he bought a winery with land for vines. His HQ is a historic building and local landmark, erected in 1918 and one of San Juan’s first earthquake-proof structures. After restoration, it’s been transformed into a wonderful cellar. A red ideal for solo sipping, or with grilled meats.

Search for Domaine La Sobilane and you'll see it has an amazing reputation for the famous, fortified sweet wine of this Mediterranean area, Rivesaltes. Some wines going back 80 years. They are knockout, but so is the estate's gorgeous, opulent dry white. Rivesaltes hasn't been a fashionable tipple for the last 30+ years, so the enterprising family, situated close to the Med and just east of Perpignan, explored other avenues. They planted native varieties which they believed would excel and made a dry white. This exotic blend of Grenache Gris and Vermentino with Chardonnay proves them right – ripe peach and apricot meld beautifully with a bright lemony zip and characterful notes of grilled almonds and blossom. Treat yourself to one of the world’s finest Pinot Gris. It may not be labelled 'Grand Cru', like many of the Zind Humbrecht wines are, but it tastes like one. Tiny yields, exemplary volcanic soils ensure an opulent, lusciously layered 94 point white.

Decanter has named Domaine Zind Humbrecht as one of France’s Top 10 wineries: “Does winemaking genius exist? If it does then Olivier Humbrecht MW must be in the frame.” Wine Advocate called the wines “absolutely impressive in their depth”. The family have been Alsace growers since 1620 and started making their wines in 1947. They now have 40 hectares, all tended biodynamically – by 22 full-time staff – to express as perfectly as possible the grape and its limestone ‘calcaire’ terroir. “Pinot Gris is a grape which has strong ties to the earth. It needs strong terroir and low yields to assert its character,” says Olivier Humbrecht. The wine's rich, creamy, exotic fruit shows how he got the balance just right. Perfect with sea bass or crab.

An exuberant, super-fresh white from Chile's remote Elqui Valley, next door to the Atacama desert. Brisk nights ensure the fabulous crispness of Don Aldo, which combines Pedro Ximénez and Chardonnay in this intensely aromatic, mineral-zipped white.

At 2,100 metres above sea level, Don Aldo’s Pedro Ximénez vines account for the highest in Chile. This lofty altitude does wonders for the berries, lending full flavour concentration and intense aromas. As a variety best known for making superb, sweet, fortified wines, it shows its class here as an aromatic, dry white. A splash of Chardonnay brings bright peach fruit to the fresh, citrusy minerality. The wine is from two Italian winemakers – Don Aldo and Giorgio Flessati. Aldo was the first to leave his homeland of northern Italy for Chile’s Elqui Valley in 1951 and his cousin, Giorgio Flessati, joined him in the 1980s. Together they make Trophy-winning wines that impress. This is an exciting, out-of-the-box, crisp white. Very refreshing.

El Bombero red regularly sits in our customer’s Top 10, so we are excited to present its new sibling - a vibrant, fruity rosado. It comes from Cariñena, a hot, arid region of Spain where sun-loving grapes like Garnacha thrive. Along with big reds, the region produces bright, bold pinks. With just a few hours of contact between the grape juice and skins, the rosés catch the bright berry notes and a light hue.

El Bombero rosado is a wonderful example of a new wave of Garnacha rosés. It lies between Spain’s traditional fruity, medium-bodied rosés and the pale, light-bodied Provençal style. Showing great fruit finesse, it’s ideal to sip on its own, while its roundness makes it a great food wine as well – especially with a tasty paella.
