From Winemaker of the Year, Jorge Alvès, this is a very fine, elegant and expressive Alentejo red. All native grapes, sustainably grown, with a very light hand in the cellar, it is textured, complex and elegant with spiced black fruit and freshness.

You may know the name – Amorim – largest producers of cork in the world. This, however, is winemaking on a micro-scale, amongst the oak forests of Alentejo. The family have come together and restored a wine estate that was founded in 1758. They combine the very best modern thinking with the great traditions of the past – that means using clay-pot amphorae and terracotta tinajas, as well as barrels, for the winemaking. Above all, however, is a true respect for the area's ecosystem, with sustainability at its core, plus minimal intervention in the wine cellar. The vineyards for Almeia de Cima lie at the highest point (424 metres altitude) to ensure a freshness and balance to this fine wine, made from all-native Portuguese grapes. Open early.

Special barrels of wine were kept for the king when he visited. Today, talented winemaker Joana Lopes makes this red specially for us, blending Syrah with Portugal’s exciting native grapes. Previously awarded a Wine Enthusiast Best Buy Award, the 2023 has lovely intensity of flavour and velvety smoothness. Formerly known as Capbern Gasqueton, this Cru Bourgeois Saint-Estèphe estate has been in the same family for 10 generations. It's the same family that owns 3ème Cru Classé Calon Ségur. It lies in one of the finest parts of the appellation, between Phelan Ségur and Meyney, and every aspect is given Grand Cru care. Hand picking of the 41 hectares of vines, with ageing in top-quality oak, all adds up to the exceptional quality.

This vintage has gathered many top scores from wine critics such as Jeb Dunnuck and James Suckling, who called it "full-bodied with a deep character". Two thirds Cabernet with almost the same in new oak, it has “gorgeous cassis, violets, classy oak, with beautiful tannins” (Jeb Dunnuck). One to cellar for a few years.

Château Haut Pougnan has a long history of awards – seven Golds just last year. 150 years of experience and well-placed vineyards just over the river from the Right Bank stars, plus an exceptional vintage in 2020, have raised this rich-fruit claret.

A family estate since 1852, Château Haut Pougnan lies in the gently rolling hills of the Entre-Deux-Mers, just across the river Garonne from the famous names of the Right Bank. On their 34-hectare property, in Saint Genès de Lombaud, Merlot is the star grape, with Cabernet Sauvignon in a supporting role and a little Cabernet Franc, all ripening well on the southeast-facing slopes. In cooler, west-facing vineyards, the estate grows Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle to make a fine classic white. 2020 was an exceptional vintage in Bordeaux with " a balance of richness and energy” wrote critic Antoni Galloni.
