Low Stock Altos R Pigeage Blanco Rioja 2021

Altos R Pigeage Blanco Rioja 2021

Item Code: 2982121

Description

With three Golds and 96 points, this is a stellar white Rioja. It’s the flagship of Altos, a cellar founded in 2006 by Jean-Marc Sauboua, already with 260 Golds. Old-vine Viura and Chardonnay, fermented in barrel, it's intense, citrusy and toasty.

Haut-Brion trained Jean-Marc Sauboua was born and raised in Bordeaux, but is also half Spanish. For many years he’s made wine for us all over the world, Bordeaux in particular, but when he decided to start a project of his own, Rioja was his only thought. And only the very highest parts of the appellation. Right from the start Jean-Marc’s aim was to make a Grand Cru style of Rioja, wines full of fruit with balanced oak. Pigeage (pron. pea jarge), two reds and one white, are his flagship wines and in just 11 vintages have won over 150 Golds. Old-vine Viura and high-grown Chardonnay, fermented in French oak, this is intensely citrusy with toasty oak and mineral zip. The finest release yet thanks to a cool vintage. A superb dinner party white.

Bartolomeo Lorenzi Amarone 2020

Item Code: 3629120

Description

If you love bold, powerful reds that leave an impression, this dense, cherry-charged Amarone is for you. It’s made by specialist of this style, Cantina Negrar – Italy’s 2016 ‘Winery of the Year’. Rich, textured, with lots of spiced red fruits.

Wine Enthusiast calls Amarone “one of 15 icons in Italian wine”. They are certainly some of the country’s most treasured reds. Rooted in the ancient tradition of sun-drying grapes before fermentation, Amarone wines offer exceptional richness and a glorious combination of power and complexity that cellars well, too. No wonder they are sought after worldwide. This 2020 from esteemed Cantina Negrar pays tribute to 18th century poet Bartolomeo Lorenzi, whose epic poems celebrating rural life made Valpolicella wines famous.

The grapes are from the ancient, dry, stone terraces of the cool Marano Valley, where they ripen slowly. They are then air-dried for 120 days to intensify flavours. Decant early and enjoy with hearty dishes, or cellar.

Château Cazauviel 2017

Item Code: 4284817

Description

An affordable claret from Margaux, one of the Haut-Médoc's top communes, is a rare thing. So this wine from a little-known family estate is a bit of a steal. Due to severe frosts, 2017 was a tricky vintage, yet still producing 5-star wines.

Lying close to Margaux's Châteaux Giscours and du Tertre, Château Cazauviel remains surprisingly under the radar. It was inherited by Régis Bernaleau from his father in 1978 and today remains in family hands. It is situated on the prized gravel soils of the Arsac plateau, which lends both an intensity and a finesse to the wine. This pretty claret is from a vintage struck by early April frosts – the most devastating for many years.

It reduced yields, but as Decanter wrote, "there are some excellent wines." Most, like Cazauviel 2017, are not long keepers, but makes delightful drinking now. Ideally open a couple of hours before serving and decant. It'll make a delicious glass with roast chicken with morels or a mushroom croustade.

Château Haut-Pauillac 2017

Item Code: 4463317

Description

Bordeaux’s Haut-Médoc makes some of the world’s finest wines and three of the best – Premiers Grands Crus Classés – lie in Pauillac. This château isn’t Cru Classé but it’s a fine claret, now with 7 years age, and showing lovely cedary fruit maturity.

On Bordeaux’s Left Bank, in the heart of the Haut-Médoc, Pauillac is one of the most sought-after appellations for fine, muscular, long-aged claret. It boasts three Premiers Grands Crus Classés, namely Mouton-Rothschild, Lafite and Latour. Château Haut-Pauillac belongs to the Peyronnie family and boasts vineyards dotted between some of the finest estates – vines planted on gravel soils, enjoying a climate moderated by their proximity to the Gironde estuary. Largely Cabernet Sauvignon, softened by a little Merlot, the wine was aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 15-20% of which were new. To enjoy this fine claret, open an hour beforehand and decant. A superb red to serve with your finest red meat dishes or a choice of firm farmhouse cheeses.

Château Lavabre La Closerie 2018

Item Code: 4164218

Description

We are flying the flag for one of France’s newest appellations – showcasing a French red of sophisticated quality and exceptional value. We trust you will be as excited about this wine as we are.

The Appellation

The Pic Saint-Loup was elevated to AOC status in 2016 in recognition of the region’s consistently outstanding wines. Named after the peak which bears the same name, the waters here are pristine, and the south-facing vineyards embrace the cool breezes of the Mediterranean.

The Wine

La Closiere is an 80/20 split of the region’s iconic Syrah and Grenache. Small barrels are used for the Syrah (half of them new), while the Grenache is left to its own devices in larger 2,000L foudres. At 15% alcohol level, this is a hefty beast of a red but retains a beautiful elegance thanks to exquisite craftsmanship.

The Reviews

Château Lavabre La Closerie 2018 has been racking up some excellent scores from the world’s top wine critics…

Jeb Dunnuck awards it a massive 95pts:

“… a blockbuster bouquet of black fruits, camphor, graphite, ground pepper, and cured meats. With a touch more finesse and focus compared to the appellation release, it's full-bodied and has a beautifully balanced, concentrated, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish…”

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate gives it 94pts:

“Blueberries, blackberries and licorice notes mark the nose, supported by hints of crushed stone and spicy oak. It's full-bodied and ripe but still balanced, with a more streamlined feel than the other Lavabre reds, along with silky tannins and a long, licorice-laden finish.”

And an impressive 17.5/20 from Jancis Robinson:

“Opulent! Incredibly concentrated… Lots of sweetness but at the same time it isn't sweet. Fig molasses. Coal dust. Graphite. Caraway. Lots of texture on those tannins… Huge power and broad, glossy, muscled shoulders. Nothing understated about this wine."

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Organic Pinot Gris Roche Volcanique 2018

Item Code: 4082518

Description

Treat yourself to one of the world’s finest Pinot Gris. It may not be labelled 'Grand Cru', like many of the Zind Humbrecht wines are, but it tastes like one. Tiny yields, exemplary volcanic soils ensure an opulent, lusciously layered 94 point white.

Decanter has named Domaine Zind Humbrecht as one of France’s Top 10 wineries: “Does winemaking genius exist? If it does then Olivier Humbrecht MW must be in the frame.” Wine Advocate called the wines “absolutely impressive in their depth”. The family have been Alsace growers since 1620 and started making their wines in 1947. They now have 40 hectares, all tended biodynamically – by 22 full-time staff – to express as perfectly as possible the grape and its limestone ‘calcaire’ terroir. “Pinot Gris is a grape which has strong ties to the earth. It needs strong terroir and low yields to assert its character,” says Olivier Humbrecht. The wine's rich, creamy, exotic fruit shows how he got the balance just right. Perfect with sea bass or crab.

L'Épiphanie de Pauillac 2020

Item Code: 3882020

Description

We’d love to reveal the name of the illustrious château behind this fine claret, but we’re sworn to secrecy. We can reveal, though, that it’s made at a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate in Pauillac whose Grand Vin sells for sixteen times the price.

L’Épiphanie de Pauillac is the latest of our secret releases from iconic Bordeaux châteaux. It hails from Pauillac’s top tier – a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate. There are only three in the appellation: Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild and Latour. We guarantee this wine is from one of them. It isn’t their Grand Vin, of course, but it’s made from the same fruit by the same winemaker and housed in the same barrels. Yet it costs less than 1/16th of the Grand Vin’s price.

L’Épiphanie de Pauillac has blackcurrant, cherry and ripe plum infused with subtle spice, cedar and cigar box notes. These classic aromas combine with firm tannins for a complex wine with a long finish. By all means open a bottle now, but cellaring will pay dividends.

RedHeads Dogs of the Barossa Shiraz 2019

Item Code: 2677219

Description

Dogs of the Barossa is top ranking Shiraz; another superstar from the highly creative (not to mention talented) bunch at RedHeads. They're the masters at crafting small batch cuvées that always stand apart. Like this darkly spiced, 93-point red.

Former winner of the Barossa Shiraz Trophy, Dogs of the Barossa is the story of a young dog in an old dog’s world. The ‘dog’ in this case is RedHeads: a studio proving its worth in ancient Barossa. Having led the pack in the McLaren Vale, site of the original cellar, RedHeads is now showing that, set among some of the most iconic names of Australian wine (Henschke, Penfolds, Wolf Blass), their wines still stand out. The ethos of this cellar has always been to innovate. It's why they're as proud of their eco-awards as they are the numerous medals on their wines (and cult following of loyal customers). This powerful Shiraz delivers gorgeous ripe blackberry and damson flavour of real power and depth. Decant early and serve with peppered steak.
