Fans of Argentinian Malbec will enjoy delicious Arquero. It’s from a family-owned bodega in the San Juan region. There vines grow as high as 700 metres, yet the climate is warm, producing silky, supple ripeness in this spicy, berry-filled red.

Argentina’s Malbec has taken the world by storm. While most come from Mendoza, Arquero hails from San Juan in the northwest. Vineyards are planted high, around 700 metres, under clear skies, providing optimal conditions for the vines. Despite producing delicious wines, the region’s lack of marketing muscle means they remain something of a secret. Here you’ll find Bodegas Antigua, started in 1990 by wine enthusiast Don Luis Victor Chirino. A builder by trade, he bought a winery with land for vines. His HQ is a historic building and local landmark, erected in 1918 and one of San Juan’s first earthquake-proof structures. After restoration, it’s been transformed into a wonderful cellar. A red ideal for solo sipping, or with grilled meats.

When probed about the secret of crafting such exceptional wines (two of which are always in our Top 20!), he simply shrugged and said, “this is how my family has always made wine.” Typical Opi – seriously modest. And why ‘Opi’? The nickname comes from his childhood, when his little sister would follow him through the family vineyards, calling out ‘Opi, Opi’, as she couldn’t quite pronounce his name. The Lauren-Cabaret cellar has been making great wine in the Minervois region for almost 100 years. Villa Claudius is pure, handpicked Carignan, whole-grape fermented (like Beaujolais) to highlight its bright silky fruit, wild herbs and spice notes.

It’s rare to discover a red wine from the Minervois region made purely from Carignan. Even rarer, when it’s all from old-vine Carignan, but for this prize-winning cellar it’s something of a speciality, clear from the Gold medal that it’s already won. Winemaker Sylvain Delabre knows exactly how to get the very best from his precious handpicked grapes, bringing out all the supple blackberry and raspberry fruit, along with subtle notes of wild herbs and spice. Whole grape fermentation ensures the wine is deliciously silky and supple, with minimal tannins and no hard edges. A red wine with character and depth, and freshness too. We first met Dino when he began restoring his grandfather's earthquake-struck vineyard, high in the Sicilian hills. You loved the wine it made - Tenuta Fenice. Not one to rest on his laurels, he's started another ambitious new project called w/o - wine made without compromise. He chose native Frappato as his champion, all grown organically thanks to Sicily's warm, dry climate and Dino's diligence. It's bottled in 100% recycled glass too, known as 'wild' glass, a UK first. You may notice a little variation in colour, perhaps a few tiny bubbles. All part of the charm, as is the delicious red berry and cherry fruit that greets you on the aroma and continues through on the bright, juicy palate. Try chilled solo, or with pizza or pesto pasta.
