Trapiche is one of Argentina’s top cellars and its winemaker, Daniel Pi, is world-class. Every year he picks out the three finest vineyards of Malbec and makes the Terroir series. 96-pt Finca Ambrosia is an “inky, racy and refined" Malbec (Suckling).

Founded in 1883, Trapiche is one of Argentina’s leading wineries. Twice it has won ‘Argentine Wine Producer of the Year’ at the International Wine & Spirit Competition and in 2019, 'New World Winery of the Year'. Every year Daniel Pi, one of the most capable and knowledgeable winemakers in the country, chooses the three best Malbecs from 90 separate vineyards for Trapiche’s premium Single Vineyard range. Grapes for this wine were hand harvested from Finca Ambrosia’s high (1300 metres) Gualtallary vineyard, then vinified in small vats with natural yeasts and matured for 18 months in new French oak. It’s a remarkable, textured wine, offering “Blackberries with violets and flowers on the nose” (James Suckling). Open early and decant.

The Lauren-Cabaret cellar has been making great wine in the Minervois region for almost 100 years. Villa Claudius is pure, handpicked Carignan, whole-grape fermented (like Beaujolais) to highlight its bright silky fruit, wild herbs and spice notes.

It’s rare to discover a red wine from the Minervois region made purely from Carignan. Even rarer, when it’s all from old-vine Carignan, but for this prize-winning cellar it’s something of a speciality, clear from the Gold medal that it’s already won. Winemaker Sylvain Delabre knows exactly how to get the very best from his precious handpicked grapes, bringing out all the supple blackberry and raspberry fruit, along with subtle notes of wild herbs and spice. Whole grape fermentation ensures the wine is deliciously silky and supple, with minimal tannins and no hard edges. A red wine with character and depth, and freshness too. He chose native Frappato as his champion, all grown organically thanks to Sicily's warm, dry climate and Dino's diligence. It's bottled in 100% recycled glass too, known as 'wild' glass, a UK first. You may notice a little variation in colour, perhaps a few tiny bubbles. All part of the charm, as is the delicious red berry and cherry fruit that greets you on the aroma and continues through on the bright, juicy palate. Try chilled solo, or with pizza or pesto pasta.

Two Golds for Wyfold 2011, and Trophies for the 2010 and 2009 – brilliant results for this elegant vintage sparkler from such a small two-hectare Oxfordshire estate. Meticulous vineyard work and expert winemaking ensure long toasty apricot flavours.

In 2003 Barbara Laithwaite and Cherry Thompson planted 4,000 vines in a hectare of the Chiltern Hills. Just 10 years later, their 2009 took top position at the prestigious Judgement of Parsons Green, the 2010 won two Trophies, 91 Decanter points and medals galore, and this 2011 has just scooped its second Gold to add to four Silvers. You can enjoy it at the renowned Le Manoir restaurant too. Barbara has now planted another hectare of vines next to the first. Crafted from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, this 2011 is testament to meticulous viticulture and the winemaking skills of Ridgeview’s Roberts clan and Barbara's winemaker son, Henry. Who needs Champagne when you have English bubbly this good? Serve at your next celebration.
