When probed about the secret of crafting such exceptional wines (two of which are always in our Top 20!), he simply shrugged and said, “this is how my family has always made wine.” Typical Opi – seriously modest. And why ‘Opi’? The nickname comes from his childhood, when his little sister would follow him through the family vineyards, calling out ‘Opi, Opi’, as she couldn’t quite pronounce his name. This is a fresh, summery white from the great Spier Estate in premium Stellenbosch, winner of 'South African Wine Producer of the Year' in 2011 and 2018, also Editor's Choice 'Winery of the Year 2022' awarded by Platter. They're one of the Cape's oldest wineries, proud of the many community projects they run, under the banner 'Growing for Good', for which they've won a top Ethical award this year. Albariño is a new venture for them and this white is a terrific introduction.

The Lauren-Cabaret cellar has been making great wine in the Minervois region for almost 100 years. Villa Claudius is pure, handpicked Carignan, whole-grape fermented (like Beaujolais) to highlight its bright silky fruit, wild herbs and spice notes.
