Coonawarra is "the finest red wine region" (The Times) in Australia and Jack Burston grows some of its best grapes. He used to sell them to a big, premium brand, but was delighted when RedHeads wanted to bottle them solo.
This cracking new release is from RedHeads, a leading eco-friendly boutique winery in South Australia. The winery was started in 2002 in the McLaren Vale – a cellar where young winemakers could come in their spare time and make just the sort of small scale wines they dreamed of.
Since then, the winery has put down real roots in the Barossa, very nearly 100% off-grid, thanks to its solar panels, and nearly self-sufficient on recycled water. There, surrounded by all of the Aussie big players, they rescue small parcels of terrific grapes and make show-stopping wines.
Catbird Seat is a standout – all the grapes from Jack Burston's cracking Coonawarra vineyard. In true RedHeads style, they have rescued a parcel of grapes from being blended away to make a premium cabernet. Sick of being tied to big brands, the grower was exceptionally keen to sell RedHeads these grapes as they knew that RedHeads would give the grapes the attention they deserve, which is why RedHeads is always in the Catbird Seat, hence this wine!
The Catbird Seat decadently showcases characters of blackcurrant jam, ripples of raspberry, and the Coonawarra’s signature Eucalyptus mint. Aged a year in French oak, it's a big, bold red, ready for your glass!
You need cat-like reflexes if you want this tasty Cabernet and free treat. Hurry!
Showcasing Chardonnay, Viognier and Semillon from Adelaide Hills, this is RedHeads’ new MC1R Blonde. This white expresses the very heart of RedHeads’ winemaking movement, its DNA (MC1R). A gorgeously spiced, ripe fruit white with citrus freshness.
