Velvet black fruit Alicante plays a minor role in many of Portugal's reds but José Neiva Correia decided to give it centre stage. Madness, some thought, but 10 Golds, a Best Buy and 90 points from Wine Enthusiast over three vintages prove him right.
If you enjoy a white with a real zip of freshness along with appealing ripe fruit, this ocean cooled Chardonnay from Portugal will perfectly fit the bill. It's from one of the finest winemakers in this great value country and last year took 4 Golds.
Amarone is the northern Italian classic red wine that commands lifelong allegiances and huge prices. Papaverone is made in the same painstaking way, using southern Italian grapes. The result is a wine every bit as rich, but much juicier and riper.
This 2019 shows just how gorgeously fruity claret can be. It's from Haut-Brion trained Jean Marc Sauboua at Le Chai au Quai and from a top vintage. Using best parcels of Merlot from the vintage, this young oaked red has lush creamy, plum fruit.
Pinot Grigio has staged something of a coup in fridge doors and on dining tables the world over in recent years. Truly outstanding, well priced examples like this are rare, however. Il Papavero is from Scipione Giuliani, whose dedication to tracking down the finest parcels of fruit throughout Italy sets him apart from his winemaking peers. He discovered the grapes for this wine in high hillside vineyards by the coast in Sicily. It’s mouthwatering stuff, a moreish mix of pear and citrus flavours.
If you’ve ever thought clarets were a bit stand offish, this seductive claret will convert you. Ripe, velvety and brimful of plum and cassis, it’s a very moreish Bordeaux from the family property of Ludovic Roussillon and a ripe vintage.
Winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua has won Trophies and Golds galore for his Bordeaux whites and this 2019 shows him on top form. The first sip reveals hallmark verve and zest with added sophistication, body and a lingering toastiness from the Sémillon and the oak. He likes to 'keep it in the family' at Le Chai, and sources some of his grapes from Château de Thieuley, firstly because the fruit quality is so good, and, just by the way, it's owned by his two nieces, great winemakers in their own right.
Chianti is one of Italy’s great classic reds and Riserva denotes a superior wine with ageing. This fabulous 2017 is from a superb family estate we've worked with for 30 years. From the highly regarded Rufina district, this is a long, complex Riserva.
Delicious depth of ripe fruit with real freshness and zing give this Bordeaux white perfect balance. It’s a collaboration between our award winning winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua and owner of Château Le Coin Ludovic Roussillon. The key ingredient is Sauvignon – both Gris and Blanc – which together give spicy richness and peach fruit with zesty lime freshness. All the grapes are tended at Ludovic’s superb estate in the Entre Deux Mers, just over the river from our Chai in Castillon.
