An impressive, James Suckling 93-point Cru Bourgeois from the exceptional Saint-Estèphe. Only now is it beginning to open up to reveal its lavish layers of black fruit, truffle, spice box and cedar over polished tannins. An exceptional claret.
Critics praise the wine of every vintage from this Saint-Estèphe estate, which punches well above its Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel status. Wine Advocate said of the 2014, “This comes highly recommended plus great value.” In 2020, they committed to organic conversion. The property dates back to 1654, when it was known as La Doys. Christian and Lilian Thieblot made major renovations from 1989, then sold to Jacky Lorenzetti, a top French rugby club owner, who has accelerated the improvements. His efforts were rewarded with the ‘Coupe des Crus Bourgeois’ in 2015. They favour a large proportion of Merlot in the wine, which lends it a plump character, supported by the Cabernets and a little Petit Verdot, all aged in new oak. Open early and decant.
For a well-priced Saint-Julien, look to Château du Glana. Omitted in the famous 1855 classification, its fine wines present excellent value. 2014 was a late-ripening vintage, but also offers a fascinating hint of red fruits and spices. Robert Parker rates it with 90 points and it has earned 91 points from Wine Enthusiast too.
Château du Glana is a well-placed Saint-Julien estate, sitting pretty between the villages of Beychevelle and Saint-Julien, opposite to the second growth Ducru-Beaucaillou. It has a long history dating back to 1870. The Meffre family acquired it in the 1960s, carrying out extensive renovations first in 1968 and in the early noughties (year 2000-2009). It started with just 5 hectares, but today, with acquisitions over the decades, it has an extensive 59 hectares, with ideal gravelly soils, nearly all of it a continuous, single plot. Consultant in this 2014 was the late, renowned Denis Dubourdieu, who insisted on an elegant, expressive style, vinified in cement vats and aged just 40% in new oak. It is drinking very well now and will also be well over the next decade.
A winery with four trophies and more than 80 gold medals, Château La Clarière proves that Castillon is more than capable of beating Saint-Émilion. 2020 is a great vintage, with a velvety texture, no wonder it has already got six gold medals, a Grand Gold, a Double Gold, and 2 times 90pts u
With a Trophy and 97 points from Decanter, this is an exceptional white and a rare find of Timorasso. This grape is regarded as one of Italy's most exciting recent finds, grown exclusively in the Colli Tortonesi, a small region in southeast Piedmont, not far from Gavi. The wine is from the Broglia family, who set up in Gavi in 1972, restoring a villa with meticulous care, then doing the same in the vineyards. Today, it is in the hands of the third generation, Roberto and Filippo. Their fine whites regularly win high scores, while their winemaker is Professor Donato Lanati, 2015's Winemaker of the Year. This is a white to savour. Serve gently chilled, and enjoy on its own or with creamy white meat dishes, luxury fish pie or risotto.
Antonio Federici is a small, 3rd-generation cellar in Lazio, just south of Rome. As you'll taste here, its wines are both authentic and delicious. Normally, they only supply their tiny output to top restaurants in Rome. But with most shut in 2020, we managed to gain an allocation, first of their superb red and, this year, of both their red and this mouth-watering white. On fine limestone soils (the rocks of which were used to build some of Rome's most famous buildings) they grow some of Italy's most characterful native grapes and have produced a small range of award-winning wines. No doubt the skill of top Italian consultant Franco Bernabei comes into play, as well as the passion of the family. A pure expression of Malvasia Puntinata which Luca Maroni has awarded 97 points.
Tucked away between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine mountains lie Casal Farneto’s Marche vineyards. Since 1995 Verdicchio has been their prized white grape and those from Castelli di Jesi, some of the finest. Protected by the mountains on one side and cooled by sea breezes on the other, their vines produce grapes with vividly aromatic flavour. Consultant winemaker is Franco Bernabei, one of the best in the business. His aim is to create a characterful white with creamy roundness, luscious fruit and a dance-on-the-tongue freshness. Using grapes usually reserved for the winery's Riserva and Superiore Verdicchios, plus six months lees ageing, has lent even more weight and richness. A classy white with crowd appeal. A delicious aperitivo.
