Brilliant, crisp, dry Riesling from the beautiful, sun-blessed region of Alsace. Often forgotten, the appellation makes some of France’s finest whites, and Riesling is its most noble variety – just taste this pristine, lime and mineral-fresh white.

At last, Riesling is back in fashion. It's long overdue. The grape produces such an array of styles, but all with riveting freshness. It is renowned in Germany, Austria and the New World, but many forget that this variety produces some of its finest wines in Alsace, eastern France. Steep slopes, abundant sunshine (the sunniest spot in all France) and the Vosges mountains all lend the region’s wines a pristine freshness (whatever the sweetness – and they do vary from lusciously honeyed to bone dry), amazing intensity and purity of fruit. This is an elegant white from the Gisselbrecht family’s 350-year-old cellar, today run by brothers Philippe and Claude. With apple notes and lime zip, this white is ideal with fish pie or crab soufflé.

Pignello Pignoletto Frizzante NV

Fruity frizzante from the heart of Italy’s Emilia Romagna. Charming, citrusy and utterly moreish.

The Pignoletto grape is considered the “king of the Colli Bolognese wine zone”, but few have heard of it outside of the Emilia region of northern central Italy. Our buyer, Leo, had to use his persuasive prowess to secure cases of this hidden gem from winemaker Daniele Artioli. And it’s proved to be a huge hit with our customers. It’s an easy to drink, dry frizzante, made using mainly Pignoletto (named after ‘pigna’ – the Italian for ‘cone’ – due to the shape of its bunches).

Its lively green apple notes are enhanced by citrusy Trebbiano and Muscat, which lends a grapey aroma. A gentle fizz makes it a delightful apéritif, perfect for leisurely sipping in the garden on a sunny afternoon. Serve chilled and pair with salad or seafood.

Sister to our popular red Posada del Rey, this white is crafted from quality grapes sourced from three different regions. Hence it’s a humble table wine, but offers brilliant crisp lemon, lime and melon fruit as befits Spain’s exciting modern whites.

We've worked with Javier Murúa and his father, Julián, for some years now and have always been impressed with the wines they produce at their Bodegas Real Compañía de Vinos cellar in Rioja. Thanks to his easy charm, Javier also has a talent for finding outstanding parcels of grapes or wine that ‘need a home’ – not just from Rioja, but from all over Spain. And it's these select parcels that go into their Posada del Rey Blanco. This 2019 combines the zesty lime flavours of Rueda’s Verdejo with the melon and honeysuckle aromas of La Mancha’s Viura, and a touch of creamy richness from Rioja’s Malvasia. Lovely on its own, you’ll find it great, too, with Spanish style marinated sardines and other tapas dishes, lemon chicken or sauced fish.

We've won three top awards for our Portuguese range and it’s gems like this brilliantly crisp white that fires up our Buyer to discover more. It is made from Fernão Pires by star winemaker Jaime Quendera and is brimful of stony, citrus freshness.

Wine critic for The Times Jane MacQuitty wrote: “Go to Portugal for great value.” That’s certainly true of the Rainha do Mar wines from multi-award-winning Jaime Quendera. The name means Queen of the Sea, and in terms of sheer seafood-matching class this wine reigns supreme. It’s made from the aromatic, lemony Fernão Pires grape, from the Setúbal Peninsula. Centuries ago, Vasco da Gama set sail from here and discovered the sea route to India. Today Setúbal is better known as a surfers’ paradise and a winemakers’ nirvana. A sunny climate and cooling ocean breezes provide perfect grape-growing conditions. This white is deliciously fresh and crisp. Serve chilled like the locals do, solo or with grilled fish, simple noodles or a crisp salad.
