Low Stock Château Guillem de Montjustin 2019

Château Guillem de Montjustin 2019

Item Code: 3880619

Description

Be quick if you want this authentic, tiny production, richly flavoured Corbières. It's from right next door to Corbières Cru, Boutenac, and a family estate with century old vines of Grenache and Carignan. Sumptuous, rich and generously spiced.

Renowned French winemaker Gérard Bertrand makes his £40+ a bottle Corbières in craggy Boutenac. Just across a small country road is the village of Fabrezan and its equally amazing vineyards. It's where, in fact, Tony Laithwaite bought his first Corbières shipment back in 1971. Today young couple Amelie and Jean-Baptiste work tirelessly, in evenings and weekends (after their day jobs as consultant winemakers), tending their ancient vines and making their cru quality Corbières.

The vines were planted by J-B's great grandfather, a cellar built by his son, but more recently the grapes were all sold to the local coop. J-B and Amelie took over in 2007 and decided they could make something much better. This fabulous Grand Cru style is the result.

Château Haut Pougnan 2020

Item Code: 4252620

Description

Château Haut Pougnan has a long history of awards – seven Golds just last year. 150 years of experience and well-placed vineyards just over the river from the Right Bank stars, plus an exceptional vintage in 2020, have raised this rich-fruit claret.

A family estate since 1852, Château Haut Pougnan lies in the gently rolling hills of the Entre-Deux-Mers, just across the river Garonne from the famous names of the Right Bank. On their 34-hectare property, in Saint Genès de Lombaud, Merlot is the star grape, with Cabernet Sauvignon in a supporting role and a little Cabernet Franc, all ripening well on the southeast-facing slopes. In cooler, west-facing vineyards, the estate grows Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle to make a fine classic white. 2020 was an exceptional vintage in Bordeaux with " a balance of richness and energy” wrote critic Antoni Galloni. Enjoy that power in this silky, well-ripened claret. Delicious now (open early and decant) or cellar. A treat with roast meats.

Low Stock Château Haut-Bergey 2007

Château Haut-Bergey 2007

Item Code: 1851507

Description

Critic Robert Parker described this as "Consistently one of the top, under-the-radar wines of Pessac-Léognan". It has to be good to have 14 years age and still be tasting silky, complex and long. A mellow claret with earthy, leafy red fruit length.

Haut-Bergey dates back to the 15th century, a time when the vineyards of Pessac Léognan were more numerous, and even praised by the diarist Samuel Pepys. These days many have been engulfed by the city of Bordeaux – sadly, as this is where some of the region’s greatest, often undervalued clarets can be found. This property was purchased by Sylviane Garcin Carthiad in 1991 and full renovations begun in the cellar and vineyards. It shows in the superb quality of the wines and their longevity. Cabernet-led, with a sizeable portion of Merlot lending roundness, it was aged in 50% new oak barrels for 16 months. Showing mature dusty fruits, it is mellow, with cedar, earthy, spice complexity. Serve with game or, as a plain foil, with chicken.

Château Haut-Pauillac 2017

Item Code: 4463317

Description

Bordeaux’s Haut-Médoc makes some of the world’s finest wines and three of the best – Premiers Grands Crus Classés – lie in Pauillac. This château isn’t Cru Classé but it’s a fine claret, now with 7 years age, and showing lovely cedary fruit maturity.

On Bordeaux’s Left Bank, in the heart of the Haut-Médoc, Pauillac is one of the most sought-after appellations for fine, muscular, long-aged claret. It boasts three Premiers Grands Crus Classés, namely Mouton-Rothschild, Lafite and Latour. Château Haut-Pauillac belongs to the Peyronnie family and boasts vineyards dotted between some of the finest estates – vines planted on gravel soils, enjoying a climate moderated by their proximity to the Gironde estuary. Largely Cabernet Sauvignon, softened by a little Merlot, the wine was aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 15-20% of which were new. To enjoy this fine claret, open an hour beforehand and decant. A superb red to serve with your finest red meat dishes or a choice of firm farmhouse cheeses.

Château Haut-Pauillac 2017 6btl

Item Code: X0855613

Description

DW Wine Club Member Price: $1,588

Pauillac, in Bordeaux’s hallowed Médoc, is home to "the most concentrated area of fine red wine in Bordeaux” (Oz Clarke). Three out of the five First Growths can be found here (Lafite, Latour and Mouton Rothschild), and its fine, muscular, long-aged Cabernet-based wines are much sought-after.

The smaller estates may not be so famous, but for winelovers interested in tasting an authentic Pauillac without paying an eye-watering price tag, this can only be a good thing. So today, we are delighted to bring you a prestigious, beautifully aged Pauillac available in a fine six-bottle collection, at an impressive price for the quality.

Château Haut-Pauillac belongs to the Peyronnie family and boasts vineyards dotted between some of the finest estates – vines planted on gravel soils enjoying a climate moderated by their proximity to the Gironde estuary. Their exquisite claret is comprised mostly of inky, dark and powerful Cabernet Sauvignon, melded with a touch of rich, plummy Merlot, aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 15-20% of which were new. A further six years in the bottle has given the wine time to reach a delicious drinking window now – though you can certainly cellar it comfortably for many more years.

Look forward to lovely rich blackcurrant, blackberry fruit with beautiful violet aromas, and a delicious cedary touch. The palate is silky, with fine tannins and a long finish. Open an hour beforehand and decant before serving with your finest red meat dishes or a choice of firm farmhouse cheeses.

Château La Clarière 2022

Item Code: 3773422

Description

Château La Clarière is Laithwaites' own Côtes de Castillon estate in France's famed Bordeaux region, very close to SaintÉmilion.

This is one of those 'under-the-radar' regions I love to search out, home to the finest quality wines, but not so well-known. As Wine International says, "If it weren't for the [political] line dividing Castillon from Saint-Émilion, its wines would be twice the price. The hills are the same, the soil is the same, the exposure is the same." The estate has won over 150 awards, including the Paris Lauréat Prix d'Excellence – not once, but twice – and Decanter magazine calls it the "leading estate in the Côtes de Castillon". La Clarière is our flagship wine and absolutely no expense is spared. Low yields, careful hand-sorting, months ageing in the finest new French oak, and rigorous tasting ensure only the best parcels become La Clarière. Mostly Merlot, silky, elegant, and supple, with a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon for structure, and slightly portioned Malbec and Cabernet Franc for balance. It's truly magnificent!

Château La Clarière Blanc 2022

Item Code: 3673822

Description

We had long wanted to make an estate white at Château La Clarière to match the magnificent estate red.

So we were delighted when we finally secured access to some nearby white vineyards with incredible fruit that has allowed us to create the prestigious La Clarière Blanc. This dazzling white Bordeaux combines bright, character-filled Sauvignon Blanc and richer, creamier Sauvignon Gris to create an extraordinarily sensuous wine. It has enjoyed all the same lavish, no-expense-spared treatment in the winery usually accorded to the red, and the result is a citrussy, complex, textured wine that is absolutely irresistible. Oak fermented, lees stirred, and then aged in partnew oak barrels, the richness and complexity is reminiscent of the grand wines of Pessac Léognan. Smooth, rich, long and lavish … it's simply magnificent – a very worthy partner to the red. It's a truly fine dining partner that really shines when served with luxury cuisine.
