With its Mediterranean climate, the southern Rhône produces some of France’s most appealing reds. Cairanne is a particular star, with classic herb and spice notes. From a top vintage, this is a silky, warm fruit red from century old Domaine Martin.
If you want generous, ripe fruit and spice in your wine, similar to a Châteauneuf but not quite the intensity (and at a more friendly price), look for Cairanne. The cru village appellation, just east of Orange, uses the same velvety Grenache grape, with a little Syrah. This ravishing 2019 is from family owned Domaine Martin, founded in 1905 when Julien Martin bought the property and a small plot of vines. In 1947 son Jules took over, planted more vineyards and built a winery. Today the estate is run by grandsons David and Eric Martin, and they have expanded the estate into many of the southern Rhône’s finest villages. With supple, spicy, bramble fruit, this red is ideal alongside hearty casseroles or roast lamb, or as a gentle sipper solo.
