Description

Wine Advocate described a previous vintage of this fragrant, mineral-laced white as “a dead ringer for fine Condrieu”. Apart from its much kinder price. From vineyards close by and a terrific winemaker, this is a very fine, exotically spiced white.

Wine Spectator described Stéphane Ogier’s wines as “dynamic and elite”, while Wine Advocate wrote “the estate is unquestionably in the top handful of domaines in the Rhône Valley”. Stéphane took over from his father in the late 1990s, added extensively to the vineyards (he owns 10 hectares in Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph) and built himself a gleaming, modern cellar. Terroir is his raison d’être. Grapes for Viognier de Rosine come from elevated, granite-soil vineyards bordering Côte-Rôtie, just north of Condrieu. Their terroir lends the wine its wonderful mineral elegance which balances the floral peach notes. Fermentation and lees ageing in oak for two thirds of the wine brings a creamy plumpness, matched by the bright fruit.

This exquisite Sancerre is from the Laporte small family domaine in Chavignol, long regarded as one of the appellation’s top crus. Crafted from carefully selected parcels of estate-grown Sauvignon, the wine has superb balance, complexity and depth.

This classic Sancerre reflects the chalk and limestone soils known as ‘caillottes’ for which the village of Chavignol is famous. It’s a riveting wine with a great medal-winning history and comes courtesy of Serge and Elisabeth Laporte. Their 10-hectare domaine has been in the family for generations and looks set to remain so for at least one more – they’ve now been joined by their son Guillaume. He spent three years studying oenology at the university in Tours, and his input has further upped the quality of an already excellent estate. Premium Sauvignon, this wine has incredible mineral richness and pristine citrus and herbaceous flavours. A most elegant aperitif, it also goes very well with warm goat’s cheese salad or seafood of all kinds.

Decanter has named Domaine Zind Humbrecht as one of France’s Top 10 wineries: “Does winemaking genius exist? If it does then Olivier Humbrecht MW must be in the frame.” Wine Advocate called the wines “absolutely impressive in their depth”. The family have been Alsace growers since 1620 and started making their wines in 1947. They now have 40 hectares, all tended biodynamically – by 22 full-time staff – to express as perfectly as possible the grape and its limestone ‘calcaire’ terroir. “Pinot Gris is a grape which has strong ties to the earth.
