It's a cru area, with vineyards planted on the mountain's lower slopes. Warm sunny days and cold nights are perfect for bringing out the aroma, elegance and freshness in its grapes.
Fifth generation Didier Lefebvre's Château La Bégude was founded in 1896. Such is his passion for his mature vineyards, he has converted them all to organic.
He grows classic Provence varieties – Cinsault, Grenache and Carignan, with a sprinkle of Vermentino, Ugni Blanc, Syrah and Mourvèdre.
Picked early morning and cool fermented, it captures all the savoury berry freshness you'd expect of this great wine.
Provence’s rosés have long been popular with the many tourists who flock to the region every year. Yet they offer much more than a holiday tipple. They can have real elegance and complex fruit, too. Perhaps that shouldn’t be surprising as Provence has an ideal climate for this refreshing style, with twice as much sunshine as London – yet relatively moderate temperatures even in the height of summer.
This delightful pink is from the Bréban family’s small domaine in the Côte d’Azur. Their vineyards are surrounded by wooded hillsides and have a south facing aspect with excellent, well drained soils to help fruit concentration. Rounded with savoury, subtle fruitiness, it’s spot on with poached salmon, salt and pepper squid or a spicy stir-fry.

Our Bordeaux born Buyer for Provence, the highly affable Jean-Marc, has an enviable network of contacts all over France, in fact all over the world. If there's a top quality parcel of wine that needs a good home at a great price, he is the first to know. He is an expert on Provence pink and is rather fond of the wines from this top estate, the name of which we can't reveal. A great price from the 5-star domaine means it's a hush hush deal, but you'll certainly be impressed with what's in the bottle.
It's a classic Provence blend of Grenache with a little Cinsault, providing delicate strawberry notes with a subtle savoury edge and herbal length, all underscored by classic citrusy minerality. Very elegant, it's a fine wine to serve at dinner.
