You’ll find this pink’s subtle berry fruit is complemented by complex, creamy savoury hints, a lift of lavender and wild herbs with underlying brisk minerality. Ludovic Roussillon is one of the top viticulteurs in Bordeaux’s Entre-Deux-Mers. He knows how to coax the very best out of his soils to get the most flavour in his grapes. Work hard in the vineyard and the wine almost makes itself, he says. We’ve worked with Ludovic for a number of years, enjoying both his red and his white from Château Le Coin. This is another wine from his vineyards – mostly Merlot, with a little Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon – all vinified to bring out the fruit richness, supported by sleek tannins.
Rethink Bordeaux with this supple, generously fruity, rounded red. It’s already drinking really well, with or without food. Roast beef, full flavoured pasta dishes, charcuterie, cheese – this wine is very versatile.
“Gun-flint – the smell of sparks when flint strikes metal – is one way to characterise it” says Hugh Johnson. Plus, he adds, “the smell and taste of fresh blackcurrants, leaves and all” (Wine Companion). The finest examples come typically from small, independent growers like Reverdy – this tiny, seven hectare estate has won a disproportionate number of awards in recent years. Asparagus, gooseberry and mineral character make this aromatic 2019 a great match for pan fried fish or goat's cheese salad.

Provence’s rosés have long been popular with the many tourists who flock to the region every year. Yet they offer much more than a holiday tipple. They can have real elegance and complex fruit, too. Perhaps that shouldn’t be surprising as Provence has an ideal climate for this refreshing style, with twice as much sunshine as London – yet relatively moderate temperatures even in the height of summer.
This delightful pink is from the Bréban family’s small domaine in the Côte d’Azur. Their vineyards are surrounded by wooded hillsides and have a south facing aspect with excellent, well drained soils to help fruit concentration. Rounded with savoury, subtle fruitiness, it’s spot on with poached salmon, salt and pepper squid or a spicy stir-fry.
