This beautiful F.W. Nalbach Sonnenschein Riesling 2018 hails from Mülheimer, a top village of the Mosel and the prestigious 17th century Richter estate (they supply the royal cellars at Buckingham Palace!). Hugh Johnson calls the Richter estate “an extremely consistent producer of classic Mosel Rieslings”. Its steep slate vineyards produce fine Riesling with lively minerality and laser precision fruit … this is something very special!
While in the wine name, ‘Sonnen’ means sunshine and there’s plenty of that, but don’t expect high alcohol. The terroir gives a wine that’s dazzlingly bright and light on its feet – this 2018 is a taut high-wire act of beautiful, late ripened fruit and lipsmacking, cleansing acidity. It’s a treat with dim sum, and a magic match to whole fish dishes. If you love very fresh whites with a touch of sweetness you will LOVE this. Don’t miss it!
Family owned since 1664, the Karp-Schreiber estate lies in the heart of the Mosel. This important region starts southwest of the ancient city of Trier and follows the river its named after through the Rhineland to Koblenz where the Mosel joins the Rhine. Dramatic, slate-covered slopes are the key to the region’s wine quality. Estate manager Alwin Karp and winemaker son Jobst Julius have 6 hectares of Riesling, cultivated on these steep slopes, including a patch of Grand Cru Juffer Sonnenuhr vines. As the vineyards are far too precarious for machinery, all the work is done by hand.
Dry Karp from the very good 2021 vintage is a Mosel classic – zesty, delicate floral notes and mineral freshness. Great solo or with seafood or Asian dishes.
Weingut Josef Leitz is located in Rüdesheim, at the western end of the Rheingau. As the German Wine Guide notes, “Few in the Rheingau make finer wines than Leitz.”
This family estate is run by Johannes Leitz, who took over what was then a 2.6 hectare property in 1985, aged just 21, and grew it to 43 hectares.
It was the Rheingau that “established Germany’s reputation for world class white wines” (Hugh Johnson) and The Boar bears this out. Ironically its named after the wild boar that are far too fond of guzzling the grapes that ripen so perfectly on the south facing slopes of the vineyard. Chill down and enjoy this zesty, poised, citrusy white on its own, or with gentle dishes of grilled fish, other seafood, tangy noodles or tasty salads.

Germany has always produced some of the world's finest Rieslings. With the help of slightly warmer temperatures, German winemakers have perfected a dry style of wine too. As this fine white proves, they can be gloriously zingy with brilliant, ripe apple, peach and lemon fruit, undercut by intense mineral poise. This classic dry Riesling from historic Rheinhessen was made by Dominik Meyer at the award winning Niersteiner Weingossenschaft, founded in 1930.
It's from the wonderfully ripe 2022 vintage, too, so there's ample fruit to savour too. Whether enjoyed as an aperitif or as a partner to fish, spicy Asian food or pork, it's undeniably delicious. So pour a glass, breathe in the vibrant apple, peach and lime fruit and freshness, and sip.
Named ‘Pfalz Discovery of the Year 2017’ by Germany’s Wein magazine, Oliver Zeter is an exciting, pioneering winemaker. He loves Riesling, but he is equally excited by other white grapes. This is a fresh, citrusy Sauvignon and Pinot Blanc.
