Antonio Federici is a small, 3rd-generation cellar in Lazio, just south of Rome. As you'll taste here, its wines are both authentic and delicious. Normally, they only supply their meagre output to top restaurants in Rome.

But with most shut in 2020, we managed to gain a small allocation of this superb, cherry-scented red. And again, the following year. On fine limestone soils (the rocks of which were used to build some of Rome's most famous buildings) they grow some of Italy's most characterful native grapes.

From these they make a small range of award-winning wines. No doubt the skill of top Italian consultant Franco and Matteo Bernabei comes into play, as well as the commitment and passion of the family.

A silky, smooth, easy red.

Lying deep in the warmth of southern Italy, Puglia is a haven for authentic, rich reds that exceed expectations without breaking the bank. Our buyer, Leo, took great pleasure in reserving this wine, named after its talented winemaker Leonardo Palumbo. Winemaker Leo says it’s a rule of his family that you only put your name on the label of a wine you’re really delighted with. And he is!

This wine showcases a luscious, smooth blend of Puglia’s finest red grapes. Nero di Troia for elegant peppery fruit, Negroamaro for deep colour, ripe plum hints and structure, and Primitivo for damson hints and deeper bass notes. Together, they make the perfect ensemble – dark, ripe deliciousness. Best with grilled meats or a hearty veggie casserole.

From yet another quality Californian vintage, Bold Move 2021 marries three powerhouse grapes. Cabernet Sauvignon packs a punch with it’s deep, black-fruit aromas, brooding Petit Verdot adds great structure and tannins to the blend, while Petite Sirah contributes concentrated berry notes and extra body. Combined they produce this bold, intense fruit-filled red blend. A sure winner for any Californian wine lover – the previous vintage even won bronze at the San Francisco International Wine Competition.

Enjoy its rich, ripe blackcurrant and plums flavours, with baking spice layers, firm tannins and a long, sumptuous finish. A delicious red to sip on its own, or a great choice with roasted meats, vegetarian burgers, or spag bol.

To celebrate 25 great years of Pillastro, this special 25th anniversary edition uses the darkly spiced Primitivo grape that you know and love, but with extra oomph and intensity. The legendary Angelo Maci added two special parcels of grapes to the blend – a cuvée that enjoyed a full six months ageing in barrel for an extra spicy kick, and grapes that enjoyed extra hang time on the vines to ensure even more concentration and richness. The Chapoutier name is synonymous with some of the finest wines of the Rhône. The family founded an estate in the north of the region, in prized Hermitage, in 1808 and it has stayed in the family since. Michel Chapoutier took charge in the 1980s, introducing braille on his labels, single vineyard wines and meticulous biodynamic methods. His adventurous spirit made him look further afield for great estates and in 2000 he bought Bila-Haut in the Roussillon. Terroir is of the utmost importance to him and his wines must taste real!

This is a gloriously expressive red using Syrah, Grenache and Carignan from his rugged Roussillon vineyards. With silky black cherry, bramble fruit and spice, this is a top wine for roast meats or a rich cassoulet.
