He searches out Garganega grapes from the slopes of Monte Calvarina, the volcanic soils of which lend a bright minerality to the wine. Hand picking is as essential on these steep slopes as it is for quality, while lees stirring in old oak vats lends a creamy roundness and texture to this terrific wine. Pillastro Primitivo is one of our best-loved wines. The three-time Winery of the Year has blended Cabernet with Primitivo, from 80-year-old vines, to make this dark swarthy red. It's barrel aged as well to add oak spice to the rich fruit.

Not at all, but his family had a bit of land in Friuli, with a few rows of vines, that had been theirs for generations. From the grapes of these, they made a simple wine for their own dinner table. All this fascinated Alessandro, and wine became his chosen career. And we're glad it did.
