Our Trophy-winning Bordeaux winemaker at Le Chai, Jean-Marc Sauboua, is delighted with his Réserve Blanc. 2020 was a top vintage for Bordeaux, but even then he insisted on the very highest calibre grapes – 60% Sauvignon Blanc with 40% old-vine Sémillon, fermenting the former in stainless steel to preserve the vivacious, grassy fruit, and the latter all in oak.
He’d planned just a four-month stay in barrel for this luxurious white, but in the end plumped for two years, as the fruit was so ravishing. Lees aged too, its flavours are well married now – fresh herbaceous, peach and citrus notes seamlessly integrated with the creamy vanilla from the barrels. It’s very much a food wine, best served gently chilled with sauced fish or white meats.

You may not be familiar with Verdejo, but the name Lime Leaf conjures up a flavour impression that exactly matches the wine. Verdejo is one of Spain’s most successful white varieties, with the fashionable Rueda region setting the benchmark.
However, every vintage, our friend the virtuoso winemaker Javier Murúa uses his impressive contacts to locate small parcels of Verdejo in the cooler parts of central Spain to create this exclusive cuvée. In 2021 the high plains of La Mancha and areas close by provided just what he was looking for. We love Lime Leaf’s pure, limy flavours at a quality that belies its humble ‘table wine’ classification and always at an enticingly low price. Enjoy as a refreshing apéritif, or with seafood, paella or salads.

Kutjevo are known for making exceptional wines from Croatia’s star white, Graševina. This Gold medal cuvée combines this grape with Chardonnay aged in oak. It's a delicious, well balanced white with creamy fruit and zip.

Jeff Carrel describes himself as an eclectic winemaker. He’s part of a new generation of winemakers, operating without a vineyard or a winery. Instead, he sources small parcels of grapes from growers, rents a corner of a cellar and focuses on making brilliant wines. Currently, Jeff makes around 40 wines this way, including Morillon (the southern French term for Chardonnay).
Following malolactic fermentation in barrel and the addition of grapes with a hint of noble rot, the 2022 vintage has, once again, produced a rich, Burgundy-style white. It delivers on creamy intensity, ripe peach fruit and layers of buttery complexity. Ideally serve this big-statement white with cured ham, guinea fowl and wild mushrooms or creamy fish pie. Serve cool.

This Kiwi Sauvignon, not from Marlborough, but from next-door Nelson. This suntrap region inspired Hermann Seifried to plant vines in 1973. His son makes the wine today and his 2022 is pulsing with zingy lime, nettle leaf and tropical fruit.

In Italy Pinot Grigio is crisp and citrusy, but when the same grape is called Pinot Gris, it becomes a very different wine. Some of its finest examples are from Alsace, eastern France.
Steep slopes, abundant sunshine (the sunniest spot in all France) and the Vosges mountains all lend the region’s wines a pristine freshness, amazing intensity and purity of fruit.
This is a superb white from the Gisselbrecht family’s 350-year-old cellar, today run by brothers Philippe and Claude. The grapes are from an estate vineyard in Dambach, next door to the Frankstein Grand Cru. With granite soils and steep slopes, it produces fruit of power and intensity. Off dry, with rounded, lightly spiced stone fruit, it's great with fish pie or spicy Asian dishes.
