Normally, they only supply their meagre output to top restaurants in Rome. But with most shut in 2020 and 2021, we managed to gain a small allocation of this superb, cherry-scented red.
On fine limestone soils (the rocks of which were used to build some of Rome's most famous buildings) they grow some of Italy's most characterful native grapes. From these they make a small range of highly awarded, rule-breaking wines.
No doubt the skill of top Italian consultant Franco and Matteo Bernabei come into play, as well as the commitment and passion of the family.
A great pizza or pasta red.
In his book Grapes and Wines Oz Clarke rightly laments “the Muscat grape is treated with casual disregard by the majority of wine drinkers”. How so, when Muscat (aka Moscatel) is as old as wine itself, and so versatile it makes outstanding wines that can be sweet, dry, sparkling or fortified? So without further ado get stuck into a glass of this Moscatel Rosado, unearthed by our award-winning Buyer for Spain. This modern, fruity, medium-dry, semi-sparkling rosé from sunny Valencian vineyards is addictively moreish. Savour well chilled – on its own or with grilled prawns or summer berries.
Just imagine how the heat of the Spanish summer might drive a winemaker to create this ultimate thirst quencher. Hacienda de Lluna Moscatel Rosado is crisp, fresh and pretty, with the sweetness of a ripe grape. Sparkling and only 5% ABV, too.

Hot, dry Calatayud is home to precious old vine Garnacha that produces “some of the best value wines from Spain, if not the world” (Decanter). Dark cherry and raspberry, chocolate and vanilla spice notes - all that captured in a pretty can.
