A brilliant taste of Portugal’s flagship red, this one comes from fourth-generation Leonor Freitas (who was named ‘Comendadora,’ the equivalent of a knighthood) by the Portuguese government for her services to the wine industry. As you can imagine, she certainly knows how to produce a very fine wine. Made with fruit from the family’s acclaimed Vinha do Fava vineyard (wines from this vineyard have won over 80 Gold medals), and long aged in oak, this excellent red is packed with rich bramble, spice, herb and mineral character on a velvety smooth finish.

In 2019, out of over 800 châteaux in Bordeaux’s storied Saint-Émilion appellation, only four were ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé ‘A.’ Cheval Blanc and Ausone (first classified in 1955) were the originals. Angélus and Pavie (classified in 2012) became equally famous. Their wines sell for thousands of dollars per bottle and are usually the province of the very wealthy elite.

However, only a certain amount of Grand Vin from these top estates is allowed to be made each year. What do the wineries do with the surplus fruit? RedHeads was born in 2003 when Tony Laithwaite and a group of ambitious young visionaries turned a former restaurant into a winery like no other. The mission: to liberate fine grapes from the ‘big guys’, to empower hard working small time growers and to give winemakers complete creative freedom. By day they’d toil for big wine companies, by night they’d moonlight at RedHeads on wines they’d always dreamt of making.

16 years later RedHeads has won several Trophies, more than 100 Golds – and lots of customers. It's no surprise to see weighty, complex Esulé add to that tally. It's a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and rare McLaren Vale Cabernet Franc – only made possible by RedHeads' close relationships with the region's very best grape growers.

A Gold-medal winner, the Rocksand Shiraz has the added kudos of being named among The Independent's '12 Best Portuguese Wines', and 'best for a meat feast'! As Wine Spectator says, Portugal is "one of the most dynamic wine-producing nations in the world today". Taste and you'll agree.

However, a down draught from the Andes and the Pacific’s Humboldt Current both help to moderate temperatures by day and ensure very cold nights.

In addition, the sunlight is exceptionally bright and snowmelt from the Andes provides all the irrigation water required.

Viña Falernia, one of only two wineries in the valley, was built in the late 1990s by Italian Giorgio Flessati and won a Trophy with its first vintage. Elqui produces “some particularly gutsy Syrah at altitudes of over 2,000 metres” (World Atlas of Wine), and the Carmenère is equally robust.

Deep bramble, cassis and spice character, it's great with lamb. Best decanted.
