200 Gallons Reserva 2021

Item Code: 4097121

Description

Jaime Quendera, our favourite Portuguese winemaker, has made a juicy, fruit-forward red, aged in a very special cask. Enjoy Alicante Bouschet’s silky texture, sourced from rare, ancient vines that ooze rich flavours of black cherry and pepper.

Can you imagine buying 1,008 bottles of wine in one year?

That’s 200 gallons to be exact – the same amount that each American household was allowed to make for ‘personal use’ during Prohibition.

And the go-to grape during this DIY time wasn’t Cabernet or Merlot, it was the bold and juicy Alicante Bouschet - widely planted in California but originally from Portugal.

Today, award-winning winemaker Jamie Quendera has crafted a mighty, Reserva-quality red, from rare 100-year-old vines.

And the unique twist? Jamie aged the wine for 12 months in custom double casks. The top and bottom are French oak (imparting subtle spice) while the long side planks are American (for vanilla notes).

The result is an ultra-smooth, cherry-ripe, well-spiced drop!

Low Stock 30 Mile Shiraz 2020

30 Mile Shiraz 2020

Item Code: 3230820

Description

This is a rich, full flavoured, Gold-medal Shiraz from Jimmy Watson Trophy winning winemaker John Quarisa. James Halliday praises him for his “great value” wines. His 30 Mile is bang full of deliciously ripe and bold berry fruit and spice.

The judges at the China's Wine & Spirits Best Value Awards were impressed by this rich, spicy Shiraz, unanimously awarding it a Gold. It’s from John Quarisa, who for many years made wine for the biggest names in Oz, winning both the Jimmy Watson and Stodart Trophies. Today, with the help of his wife Josephine, he crafts winners like this. ‘Passion is Everything’ is their motto, and, after just over a decade in operation, their winery in New South Wales boasts four stars from Aussie wine guru James Halliday. He describes the “exceptional value for money provided by the wines” and is full of praise for this red. It’s deliciously easy going, but still packs a punch of luscious ripe fruit. A sure bet for a bbq, a roast or a hearty bake.

Low Stock Albastrele Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Albastrele Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Item Code: 4150119

Description

We've bought you crisp whites and fresh rosés from Moldova's award winning Albastrele. Now here is a smooth, blackberry bursting Cabernet. A mix of young and old vines gives a balance between freshness and dark, smoky richness to this tasty drop.

Cabernet Sauvignon is known to be the hero of Bordeaux. But this thick-skinned berry also excels in Moldova, a country with a strong winemaking history, as well as a handful of award winning modern wineries - Albastrele being one of these.

Since its launch over a decade ago, Albastrele has amassed awards in Europe for nearly every vintage.

It shows just how perfect for winemaking the Black Sea influenced climate in Moldova really is.

No wonder that during the 18th and 19th centuries Moldova became the ‘Vineyard to the Tsars’.

Made from hand picked grapes at the Tvarditsa Estate, Albastrele is named after the cornflowers that carpet the vineyards in spring.

Winemaker Haraba Marian has crafted a smooth, blackberry rich Cabernet in 2019.

Alta Tierra Syrah Gran Reserva 2016

Item Code: 2070016

Description

Viña Falernia is a first class winery in Chile’s high Elqui Valley. It put the region on the map in 2005 by winning a Trophy for its inaugural Syrah. The beautifully smooth, rich 2016 Gran Reserva is a must for any fan of serious, oak-aged Syrah.

Get set to try one of Chile’s top Syrahs: Alta Tierra Gran Reserva.

It won a Trophy for its first release, another Trophy and Gold for 2007 and 2009, and Gold for 2010.

It’s from the Elqui Valley, an extraordinarily high region next to the Atacama Desert.

Thanks to the wonders of irrigation, flourishing green vineyards stand out in stark contrast to their moonscape surroundings.

The award winning Viña Falernia was set up by Italians Aldo Olivier Gramola and Giorgio Flessati in 1995 and is one of only two wineries here.

Today they have extensive vineyards and a cellar packed with state of the art equipment.

With impressive richness, great complexity and finesse, this is a wine to decant and serve with roast lamb on a special occasion.

Low Stock Altos de la Guardia Selección de Familia Rioja 2014

Altos de la Guardia Selección de Familia Rioja 2014

Item Code: 4375914

Description

This glorious Rioja was destined for Reserva quality, aged a year in barrel and then bottled. But upon tasting, winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua decided it could be tucked away a little longer.

It ended up being considerably longer than intended, but all's well that ends well, because 10 years later it's proved to be absolutely stunning – a silky, velvety luxury wine. A great choice with lamb.

Aluado Alicante Bouschet Reserva 2020

Item Code: 3547520

Description

Customers love our Gold-medal-winning Aluado red. So be prepared for the even richer Reserva version. Winemaker Jose Neiva has taken the best parcels of Alicante; the result, fabulous dark fruit and spicy length.

When Jose Neiva Correira first decided to make a red from pure Alicante Bouschet, a grape usually used as part of a blend, everyone thought he was mad – 'aluado', moonstruck, crazy.

But a huge haul of Golds later and they've changed their minds. The velvety black fruits that are so loved by our customers can now be enjoyed tenfold with the even richer Reserva edition.

José has searched out the very finest, low-yielding and intensely ripe Alicante grapes for this super cuvée, and you can taste the mouth filling difference.

Even more richness and spice, but at only 13%, it's still no heavyweight and has a lovely zip of freshness to all that blackberry, cassis and damson fruit.

Enjoy with richly flavoured casseroles and red meat dishes.

Amoras 2021

Item Code: 0287321

Description

Portugal is “the most exciting wine place on the planet” says Wine Spectator. And lots of 4 & 5-Star online reviews suggest that Amoras is one of the country’s best-value finds.

Portugal’s characterful reds are woefully under represented in the UK. But we’re righting that wrong with full-flavoured beauties like Amoras.

It comes from Casa Santos Lima, a grand, family-run property near Lisbon and the Atlantic coast.

The winery was founded by Joaquim Santos Lima in the late 19th century, and three generations later is one of Portugal’s most go-ahead cellars, with Maria João Santos Lima and José Luís Santos Lima Oliveira da Silva, granddaughter and great grandson of the founder, at the helm.

Amoras brings together four cracking local grape varieties: leafy raspberry Castelão, juicy cherry-rich Camarate, cassis-laden Touriga Nacional and plummy Alicante Bouschet.

Superb as a glass on its own or with pork-bean casserole.

Antakari Carmenère Syrah 2021

Item Code: 0331321

Description

Chile's Elqui Valley boasts some of the world’s highest vineyards, as well as clear skies and purest sunshine. Today, thanks to the vision of Italian Giorgio Flessati, it makes great wines too, like this intense and peppery Carmenère-Syrah blend.

Lying next to the Atacama Desert, the Elqui Valley seems an unlikely spot to grow high quality grapes.

However, a down draught from the Andes and the Pacific’s Humboldt Current both help to moderate temperatures by day and ensure very cold nights.

In addition, the sunlight is exceptionally bright and snowmelt from the Andes provides all the irrigation water required.

Viña Falernia, one of only two wineries in the valley, was built in the late 1990s by Italian Giorgio Flessati and won a Trophy with its first vintage. Elqui produces “some particularly gutsy Syrah at altitudes of over 2,000 metres” (World Atlas of Wine), and the Carmenère is equally robust.

Deep bramble, cassis and spice character, it's great with lamb. Best decanted.

Antonio Federici Rosso Roma 2021

Item Code: 3737421

Description

Appealing, silky, ripe artisan red from close to Rome - cherry-laden with warming oak spice.

Antonio Federici is a small, 3rd-generation cellar in Lazio, just south of Rome. As you'll taste here, its wines are both authentic and delicious. Normally, they only supply their meagre output to top restaurants in Rome.

But with most shut in 2020, we managed to gain a small allocation of this superb, cherry-scented red. And again, the following year. On fine limestone soils (the rocks of which were used to build some of Rome's most famous buildings) they grow some of Italy's most characterful native grapes.

From these they make a small range of award-winning wines. No doubt the skill of top Italian consultant Franco and Matteo Bernabei comes into play, as well as the commitment and passion of the family.

A silky, smooth, easy red.
