Amarone is the northern Italian classic red wine that commands lifelong allegiances and huge prices. Papaverone is made in the same painstaking way, using southern Italian grapes. The result is a wine every bit as rich, but much juicier and riper.
Tasting the sumptuous Élan-Bise, you’d think it was top flight Rhône. First vintage, it was pure Syrah, but in 2018 Mark discovered parcels of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan that really shone. He decided they'd make a terrific blend. Mark is chief winemaker at Le Chai, our cellar in Castillon, and he has an enviable network of grower contacts in the Languedoc Roussillon. He knows exactly where the best grapes are to be found.
Le Roi Bœuf is an exclusive BIG red like no other. Along with local star winemaker Lionel Osmin, our Bordeaux buyer has crafted, what he calls "the ultimate steak wine". One sip of its decadent, richly spiced black fruit flavours and you'll agree.
La Fonte d'Oro's built up quite a fan club since it first arrived in 2008. It's a velvet smooth red packed with black fruit flavour thanks to some brilliantly creative winemaking courtesy of the fabulously talented Gaetane Carron. She knew that by drying the finest Negroamaro and Primitivo grapes, two Puglian varieties that ooze ripe fruit character, she’d concentrate their flavours even more. Of course this is a costly way to make wine (which is why famous Amarone starts at around £20), but the results speak for themselves.
