Lusus Reserva 2018 is a lavish, indulgent rich red – as you'd expect of a wine named after the companion to Bacchus, the Roman God of Wine. It’s got great credentials too, being made by the legendary Osvaldo Amado who has won over 1,100 awards. Since 1991, he has been winemaker at the Adega Cooperativa de Cantanhede in Bairrada, a world leading cellar that has twice been named Co-operative of the Year and has also been counted among the Top 100 Wineries of the World!
Osvaldo’s lavish Gold-medal, 5 Star Reserva is made with fruit from the Beira Atlantico region, about 150km north of Lisbon. The main variety of the region is a grape called Baga, renowned for its acidity and powerful tannins (similar to Nebbiolo). It is so intense that it is usually blended with other grapes, but here it shines solo in all its glory. Osvaldo has done an amazing job managing to tame all that powerful fruit, and create a mouth filling, creamy red that you’ll love to savour.
Carefully fermented to be dark and potent, but still velvety smooth, then aged in barrel, Lusus is a sumptuous, warming, decadent wine. It offers ripe blackberry and plum with rich spice on a long, lovely, velvety finish. It really is impressive. If you like the BIG flavours of Portuguese reds, you will really love this.
Portugal is famous for its grilled meat, so char-grilled or barbecued fare would be the perfect accompaniment to this delicious big red. Anything hot, smoky and sizzling really!
