Low Stock Altos de la Guardia Tempranillo 2019

Altos de la Guardia Tempranillo 2019

Item Code: 0515219

Description

From Spain's 2017 Winery of the Year, with 125 Golds, this is a lightly oaked, bright fruit Rioja.

Having made Trophy winning wines at other people’s cellars for 25 years, in 2006 our head winemaker, Jean-Marc Sauboua, decided to buy his own winery.

Despite being Bordeaux born, he chose Rioja (his mother is from Spain), with the sole aim of making a Grand Cru style of wine. He brought in another top player, Hector Gomez, as winemaker, and since then they have won well over 120 Golds, ‘Rioja of the Year’ in 2017, and many more awards besides.

They work closely with growers, whose vineyards are the highest in the region, to obtain super quality grapes.

High altitude adds elegance and intensity to the fruit, while ageing mostly in French oak lends a more subtle layer of toasty vanilla. Decant early before serving with lamb, pork or paella.

Aluado Alicante Bouschet 2022

Item Code: 1549722

Description

Alicante plays a minor role in many of Portugal’s reds, but José Neiva Correia decided to give it centre stage. Madness some thought, but over 30 Golds, a Best Buy and countless rave customer reviews later has proven José right.

They said he was ‘aluado’ (‘moon-mad’) but José Neiva Correia has proven his doubters wrong. Inky black Alicante Bouschet is usually found in Portuguese red blends, there to add deep colour and black fruit flavours.

Rarely, if ever, is it seen on its own. That didn’t deter José - a talented winemaker, credited by wine journo Tim Atkin as the man behind Portugal’s wine revolution.

José saw potential in this dark Portuguese star and his conviction has paid off. Aluado is now one of our customers’ favourite reds with over 1000 5-star reviews.

Winning Gold medals almost every vintage, Jose makes the wine at his family estate, Quinta de Porto Franco, just north of Lisbon.

A rich, velvety red, great solo or with grilled meats and stews.

Aluado Alicante Bouschet Reserva 2020

Item Code: 3547520

Description

Customers love our Gold-medal-winning Aluado red. So be prepared for the even richer Reserva version. Winemaker Jose Neiva has taken the best parcels of Alicante; the result, fabulous dark fruit and spicy length.

When Jose Neiva Correira first decided to make a red from pure Alicante Bouschet, a grape usually used as part of a blend, everyone thought he was mad – 'aluado', moonstruck, crazy.

But a huge haul of Golds later and they've changed their minds. The velvety black fruits that are so loved by our customers can now be enjoyed tenfold with the even richer Reserva edition.

José has searched out the very finest, low-yielding and intensely ripe Alicante grapes for this super cuvée, and you can taste the mouth filling difference.

Even more richness and spice, but at only 13%, it's still no heavyweight and has a lovely zip of freshness to all that blackberry, cassis and damson fruit.

Enjoy with richly flavoured casseroles and red meat dishes.

Amoras 2021

Item Code: 0287321

Description

Portugal is “the most exciting wine place on the planet” says Wine Spectator. And lots of 4 & 5-Star online reviews suggest that Amoras is one of the country’s best-value finds.

Portugal’s characterful reds are woefully under represented in the UK. But we’re righting that wrong with full-flavoured beauties like Amoras.

It comes from Casa Santos Lima, a grand, family-run property near Lisbon and the Atlantic coast.

The winery was founded by Joaquim Santos Lima in the late 19th century, and three generations later is one of Portugal’s most go-ahead cellars, with Maria João Santos Lima and José Luís Santos Lima Oliveira da Silva, granddaughter and great grandson of the founder, at the helm.

Amoras brings together four cracking local grape varieties: leafy raspberry Castelão, juicy cherry-rich Camarate, cassis-laden Touriga Nacional and plummy Alicante Bouschet.

Superb as a glass on its own or with pork-bean casserole.

Antakari Carmenère Syrah 2021

Item Code: 0331321

Description

Chile's Elqui Valley boasts some of the world’s highest vineyards, as well as clear skies and purest sunshine. Today, thanks to the vision of Italian Giorgio Flessati, it makes great wines too, like this intense and peppery Carmenère-Syrah blend.

Lying next to the Atacama Desert, the Elqui Valley seems an unlikely spot to grow high quality grapes.

However, a down draught from the Andes and the Pacific’s Humboldt Current both help to moderate temperatures by day and ensure very cold nights.

In addition, the sunlight is exceptionally bright and snowmelt from the Andes provides all the irrigation water required.

Viña Falernia, one of only two wineries in the valley, was built in the late 1990s by Italian Giorgio Flessati and won a Trophy with its first vintage. Elqui produces “some particularly gutsy Syrah at altitudes of over 2,000 metres” (World Atlas of Wine), and the Carmenère is equally robust.

Deep bramble, cassis and spice character, it's great with lamb. Best decanted.

Antonio Federici Rosso Roma 2021

Item Code: 3737421

Description

Appealing, silky, ripe artisan red from close to Rome - cherry-laden with warming oak spice.

Antonio Federici is a small, 3rd-generation cellar in Lazio, just south of Rome. As you'll taste here, its wines are both authentic and delicious. Normally, they only supply their meagre output to top restaurants in Rome.

But with most shut in 2020, we managed to gain a small allocation of this superb, cherry-scented red. And again, the following year. On fine limestone soils (the rocks of which were used to build some of Rome's most famous buildings) they grow some of Italy's most characterful native grapes.

From these they make a small range of award-winning wines. No doubt the skill of top Italian consultant Franco and Matteo Bernabei comes into play, as well as the commitment and passion of the family.

A silky, smooth, easy red.
